Dec-07-18 | | ChessHigherCat: Great Sunday puzzle, the only problem is it's Friday. I saw that the combination probably started with a knight move in order to play QxN with the back-rank mating threats but that's as a far as I got. |
Dec-07-18 | | boringplayer: I missed this one, but I wish to thank all the folks who list related games in their comments. Very helpful for me. |
Dec-07-18 | | agb2002: I know this game. |
Dec-07-18 | | Madman99X: Houdini gives the best defense to 19. Nb4 as 19 ... Ra6 20. Qxd6 Be7 simply conceding the knight to protect the back row. |
Dec-07-18 | | Walter Glattke: If 19.Nc7? black escapes by Bxc7 20.Qxd6 Bxd6 21.Re8+ Bf8 22.Rxg7+ Kh8 |
Dec-07-18 | | Whitehat1963: Talk about exploiting the back rank problem, wow! |
Dec-07-18 | | TeaChess: Must be a forcing knight move. c7 e7 f6 not working, so b4 is the answer. Black cannot take it imo. |
Dec-07-18 | | schachfuchs: They should not spoil this "Ukrainian Immortal" with their trivial final analysis: Kxg8 24. Re8+ Rf8 25. Rxf8# |
Dec-07-18 | | dTal: What an amazing attack. Beautiful. Didn't even come close. |
Dec-07-18 | | Walter Glattke: I see the analysis of Al Wazir ending with black Knight for pawn, maybe any chessman stood wrong. |
Dec-07-18 | | Rama: I tried Nxf6+ and Qxd6 to get to the back rank but that way didn't work. White's Nb3! was much superior. |
Dec-07-18 | | thisisasign: I've never seen this game before. What an amazing combination by Korchmar! |
Dec-07-18 | | SometimesGood: <Strelets: I would add David Bronstein, Eduard Gufeld, Efim Geller, and Leonid Stein to the list of players whose best games are more deserving of the label of "Ukrainian Immortal." Don't get me wrong; this is still an excellent game. But it just doesn't dazzle the mind and eyes like the best work of the aforementioned players.> Interesting list! |
Dec-07-18 | | drollere: poor me. i went for Bxg7. |

Dec-07-18 | | landshark: Weird moves sometimes are the right moves - ?
After staring fruitlessly at this for way too long I settled on the try Nb4, attacking the R on a3 while simultaneously threatening Qxd6 where if the Q is recaptured mate follows starting with Rd8. None of which I cross checked very much. Hmmmm.... |

And it's either mate or lose a lot of material. |
