Jul-30-06  notyetagm: What a great Black Sicilian game by Rossolimo! No wonder he played 3 ♗b5(+) against the Sicilian.
Apr-22-09  SimonWebbsTiger: I was flicking through some of Barden's archived "the Guardian" newspaper columns today. There is a funny fact - he played Mieses in his Hastings debut back in the 50s; Mieses played Paulsen in 1889(!); Paulsen himself was a contempory of Morphy. As Barden remarked, if you play him (and he still plays on the web) then you will have a sort of quick chess link back to Morphy!

FSR: <SimonWebbsTiger> Indeed, and I have done just that. I hadn't known about Mieses vs Paulsen, 1889, but only about Bird vs Mieses, 1895, which is another route to Morphy.

  Tabanus: Played 28 Dec 1950.

The Times, December 29, 1950 says "The game was adjourned in a favourable position for the French master", so there may be some missing moves.

roberts partner: The game score is complete. The time limit was 36 moves in two hours, and White's 37th was sealed.

  Tabanus: <roberts partner> Thanks! :)

I think the dates can be easily found in The Times. Someone should clone and write up Game Collection: Hastings 1950/51!

Nov-26-19  kostich in time: Chernev includes this in The Most Instructive Games Of Chess Ever Played.
Mar-07-20  ronaldpatzer: 19. b4? (giving c4 to the Knight and here black Knight takes a LOT of space from white) and after 22. exd5 (letting black's center pawn become mobile) white was already beyond lost.

An Englishman: Good Evening: Not bad for a part-time taxi driver, eh? Barden should have played 3.Bb5+ and forced Rossolimo to defend against his own weapon.

You can sense White's position slowly getting worse beginning around move 15, as he feels obligated to make one passive and/or weakening move after another. After 22...Bg5, it appears that Black has taken over the game.

Teyss: <An Englishman: (...) Not bad for a part-time taxi driver, eh?> Indeed. Had to check his bio on Wikipedia because I didn't know (or forgot): "In 1952, he moved to the U.S. (...) In New York, he worked as a waiter, a taxi driver, played the accordion, and worked as a singer and ran a chess studio as well to support himself and his family."

Yeah this game was before but let's not get nit-picky, shall we? Now, why the "Big Yellow" not sure apart from the NY cabs and the reference to Joni Mitchell's song. Nicolas Rossolimo was not that fat and he wasn't ill.

At the end Black can simply trade Qs and win trivially thanks to his extra P and centralised K: 39.Qxh2 Qxc1+ 40.Qg1 Qxg1+ 41.Kxg1 Kc6 or 40.Kg2 Qd2+ 41.K-any Qxh2+ 42.Kxh2 Kc6.
