Sep-13-06 | | greensfield: <Marco65><I couldn't find a draw after 27.Rg4+ fxg4 how does the perpetual work>Just looked at it again, your right, perpetual doesn't work. Even that's beyond me. Oh well! |
Sep-13-06 | | kevin86: I deserve a FAILED! today:(. My move was {27 e7??-met of course by ♕h2# The text stops the mate and allows for an attack along the g-file,well worth the rook. |
Sep-13-06 | | Castle In The Sky: Absolutely missed. I was playing with the idea of 27.♖g4+ with a queen pin and possible draw, but I couldn't make a win out of it. |
Sep-13-06 | | marcwordsmith: what an amazing move! It looks so passive. I don't think I would have found it in a year. |
Sep-13-06 | | Jack Kerouac: <psmith> Right you are! I was playing a Scotch game with a tumbler rather than a board. |
Sep-13-06 | | ChessGeezer: Does 28. .. Qh3 do anything for black? If 29. Rg2+ Qxg2+ 30. Kxh2+ and it looks like black stays alive. If 29. e7 Rfh8 threatens mate on h1, although I still think white can get at least a draw. |

Sep-13-06 | | NakoSonorense: No. Nein. Nothing. Nada. Booboo. Zip. Zero. Duh. Goo goo. Not a chance. And it's only Wednesday! |
Sep-13-06 | | thesonicvision: pretty tough for a wednesday |

 | | Pawn and Two: <ChessGeezer - Does 28...Qh3 do anything for Black?> After 28...Qh3 29.e7 Rh8 30.Rg2+ Qxg2+ 30.Kxg2 Black is lost. If then, 30...Rdg8 31.Qxc7 or 30...Rde8 31.Ne2 |
Sep-13-06 | | Brent Baccala: I just want to note what a disaster I think 14. ... Nxe5 turned out to be for Black. Without the passed pawn, I suspect this endgame is playable. |
Sep-13-06 | | patzer2: For today's puzzle solution, Pillsbury demonstrates that the surprising defensive move 27. R4f2!! packs plenty of offensive punch against Black's exposed and helpless King. |
Sep-13-06 | | Mendrys: Didn't come close. I find it amazing that after 26....Qh7 black is threatening mate but after the "quiet" looking rook sac 27. R4f2 gxf2+ 28. Rxf2.... white is now the one threatening mate.
However, while trying to solve the puzzle I totally overlooked black's mate threat and it looked like white had a plethora of "winning" moves to choose from.
I bet after 25. Qe5 Schiffers was thinking something like "Aha, I got him, let's see him defend 25....Qh7 without losing a rook."
Games like this lead me to believe that if we could somehow time-travel the old greats to the present they would still be quite strong capable of demolishing all but the strongest kibbitzers on this site. |

Sep-13-06 | | Trouble: this was a nice problem |

Sep-13-06 | | scorpius: To tough for a Wednesday in my opinion :o |

Sep-13-06 | | Tariqov: <castle> I don't see any draw with Rg4? i think it only leads to a lost. Tariqov

Sep-13-06 | | marcwordsmith: What if Black declines the rook on move 27? What if, instead of gxf2+, Black plays Qh4, protecting the g pawn and threatening Rh8? |
Sep-13-06
 | | tamar: <marcwordsmith> if 27...Qh4 28 Rg2 gets a rook attacking g3 before Black can counterattack |
Sep-15-06 | | marcwordsmith: Thanks, Tamar.
So then, what if after 27. . . Qh4, 28. Rg2, black responds with 28. . . f4, still threatening Rh8, and meeting either 29.ef or 29.Qxe4+ with Rf5? |

He might even be better there. Once the rook gets to h8, White has to vacate g2 to protect his King. But White can improve after 27...Qh4 28 Rg2 f4 29 Rxf4! Rxf4 30 exf4 Rh8 31 f5+ click for larger viewQuite a picturesque framing of White's super-centralized Queen. |
Sep-17-06 | | marcwordsmith: Interesting! Thanks, Tamar! So then, after 31. f5+, Kg5, 32. Nxe4+ Kg4 33. Rxg3+ and it's over. |
Sep-17-06 | | marcwordsmith: or maybe just 32.Rg3+. I guess, once White picks up both the g pawn and the e pawn, and forces Black's king onto the h-file, he wins with his center passed pawns. |
Nov-24-09 | | WhiteRook48: 27 R4f2!!
a wonder Schiffers didn't die of shock right away |
Nov-24-09 | | AnalyzeThis: Like I say, I've been playing over a multitude of Pillsbury games, and I haven't found a boring one yet, win, lose, or draw. Very interesting player! |
Dec-05-18 | | HarryP: A lovable game. |
Dec-05-18 | | sudoplatov: After 28...Qh3, our domestic Stockfish suggests 29.Rg2 forcing 29...Qxg2 30.Kxg2 followed by Ne2 and Nf4 with a big attack for White. Evaluates to about +5.5. |
