I'm a raw beginner. My son is very good for his age (10). I became interested in chess because he got me involved in it after joining his school chess club in Kindergarten. I'm trying to keep up with him as he gets better.

I usually get a few minutes to look at puzzles over lunch. I usually get Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday puzzles. Once in a while I get a Thursday puzzle. I think I have solved a Friday puzzle once or twice, but only because a series of similar puzzles during the week led me to the answer.

If someone can tell me how to avoid blunders, I'd be forever grateful.

ChessGeezer: Does 35 Rc4+ win too? It looks easier than Qxe6 to me. I must be missing something.

ChessGeezer: Rats. The black queen covers h7 and ruins everything.

ChessGeezer: I saw the first few moves and recognized it as an exercise in chasing the King. I did not follow it all the way through to checkmate in every line because I am lazy this morning. I am certain I do not get full credit. Maybe I'll claim 2 points. That gives me a total of 7 for the

ChessGeezer: Missed it. I also have to deduct a point because I did not notice the consequences of taking the Rook on yesterday's puzzle until I read <dzechiel>'s post. That means I have a total of 5 points this week.

ChessGeezer: Got it. My total score is 6 so far.

ChessGeezer: I am a little unclear if Nf3 is an answer worth 2 points on the <Al Wazir> scale. That was my answer. I was thinking 22... Nf3 (not check) 23 Bxf3 Qg1+ 24 Kxg1 Bxf3 25 any move Rh1#. Does that count? If so, I have a total of 3 points so far this week. I completely missed ...

ChessGeezer: <dzechiel - Back in high school (by this I mean the '60's) we would start the chess club up each new year with an announcement in the morning bulletin, "We will study mating positions at the first meeting of the chess club this afternoon in room...".> I'll bet that was one

ChessGeezer: This position reminds me of the "Fishing Pole" defense some folks play here in Colorado against e4 openings. The colors are reversed in this game. Key elements of the "Fishing Pole" are that White castles quickly, Black does not castle, Black puts a Knight on g5, White usually ...
