Apr-11-13  copablanco: Black's play was horrible.

plang: It is remarkable how tricky the 6 f4 line is. Black loses a lot of miniatures if he is not careful.
Apr-20-23  Brenin: 13 Nf5 threatens 14 Nxe7 mate, Qxd4, and Qd8 mate if the Black Q allows it. Black can meet these threats with 13 ... Qc5+ 14 Be3 Qc7, but then 15 Nh6+ Kg7 (or Kf8) 16 Rxf7 is mate.

perfidious: This snippet from <cu8sfan> is a propos:

<....14.♗e3 was difficult to find and is in my opinion the reason that this is a Thursday puzzle.>

The underlying idea, based on overload, is really not a Thursday puzzle, but needing this resource elevates things a little. Black's defences become overstretched and, nolens volens, something must give way.

Apr-20-23  King.Arthur.Brazil: I saw this line: 13. Nc6 (If 13... Qxd1 14. Nxe7#, or 13... Qd6 14. Qxd6 exd6 15. Ne7#). For 13... Nxc6 14. Qxd5 with two threats: 15. Qxf7# or 15. Bxc6 followed by 16. Qd8#. I don't see any defense. 13... Qe6 14. Qd8#.

I was wrong, due to Qc5+ my version doesn't work. The move must be 13. Nf5!

  al wazir: I think my line is more elegant: 13. Be8 Be6 14. Nxe6 Qxe6 15. Qd8.
Apr-20-23  Mayankk: My line was 13 Nf5 Qc5+ 14 Kh1 Nd7/Bd7 (to prevent 15 Qd1#) 15 Bxd7 Bxd7/Nxd7 16 Qxd7 gxf5 17 Qxf5. Now White had mating threats at f7 as well as g7 and Black couldn't prevent both at the same time (e.g. 17 ... Rf8 18 Qg4+ Bg7 19 Qxg7#

The lines all appeared forced to me till I realized that 14 ... Qc7 safeguarded against both Nxe7# as well as Qd1# ... Ah well.

Apr-20-23  jrredfield: Once the overall position is grasped, the things to look for here are deceptively simple as others have stated. White is threatening Nf5 and then Nxe7 mate, forcing Black to lose significant material to prevent a quick mate. Yet it was never clear to me. I guessed 13 Nf5 but didn't see all of these tricky but yet rather simple outcomes. So I guess I get partial credit.

Black can only hope to draw things out somewhat with 13 ... Qc5+ as was played. Then perhaps 14 Be3 Qxe3+ 15 Nxe3 Be6 16 Qd8+ Kg7 17 Qxe7, but White is clearly won here regardless of Black's best efforts to survive.

Apr-20-23  jrredfield: <al wazir: I think my line is more elegant: 13. Be8>

Black can counter with 13 ... Bxd4+. Then after 14 Kh1 Be6 15 Rf3 Bg7 16 Bxf7+ Bxf7 17 Rd3 Qc6 Black should be winning with better King protection and White's Q commanding the center.

An Englishman: Good Evening: Black's Queen check made this one quite a challenge for a while. All in all, a pretty drastic example of what happens when you don't know your openings. When Nezhmetdinov only needs to sacrifice one pawn...
Apr-20-23  agb2002: White is one pawn down.

Black threatens Qxd4+.

Black's back rank and queen are defenseless. This suggests 13.Nf5:

A) 13... B(g)xf5 14.Qxd5 wins decisive material.

B) 13... Qxd1 14.Nxe7#.

C) 13... e6 14.Ne7#.

D) 13... Qc5+ 14.Be3 Qc7 15.Nh6+ Kg7(f8) 16.Rxf7#.

Apr-20-23  nalinw: The first move is not Thursday level ... and blocking the check with the Bishop is also findable - but I never thought there was a mate with the Knight and Rook - this is why you need to know your mating patterns!
Apr-20-23  mel gibson: That wasn't too hard today.

Stockfish 15 says:

13. Nf5

(13. Nf5 (Nd4-f5 Qd5-c5+ Bh6-e3 Qc5xe3+ Nf5xe3 Bc8-e6 Qd1-d8+ Kg8-g7 Qd8xe7 Be5-d4 Qe7xb7 Nb8-c6 Qb7xc6 Bd4xe3+ Kg1-h1 Be3-d4 c2-c3 Bd4-b6 Ra1-e1 Rh8-f8 ) +10.73/38 227)

score for White +10.73 depth 38.

Apr-20-23  Allderdice83: Black MUST play 8 ... Nfd7. Stockfish 15 gives +0.56 after 9. e6 as compared to +4.14 after 8 ... Nd5?? 9. Bb5+. In other words, Black was already lost at move 9. However, Black is a little better after 7 ... Nh5 8. Bb5+ +0.42.

Still, 6 ... Nc6 is better, with equality (0.00 after 7. Be2)

Apr-20-23  Allderdice83: Basically, the Levenfish is an inferior line for White, useful only for catching Black in a trap. If White wants to go for an all-out Kingside attack, they should play 6. f3 or 6. Be3 and play the Yugoslav or Panov attack. Otherwise, play the classical line with 6. Be2.

Apr-20-23  jrredfield: Earlier I stated <Black should be winning with better King protection and White's Q commanding the center.> I meant Black's Q commanding the center.
Apr-20-23  Hercdon: Todays puzzle was easier than Mondays imho
Apr-20-23  ClassZPlaya: Tal beat me with the White pieces with this variation when I played him in a simul over 35 years ago. Our game continued 8. .. Nfd7 9. e6 Ne5 10. exf7+ Nxf7 11. Bb5+ Bd7. That's all I remember and I can't find the scoresheet at the moment. But I do recall that there were no fireworks or flashy sacrifices from Tal in our game. He ended up winning a pawn and simply ground me down in the ending.
Apr-20-23  King.Arthur.Brazil: <ClassZPlaya> Following your line: <8...Nfd7 9. e6 Ne5 10. exf7+ Nxf7 11. Bb5+ Bd7> , anyone would like to arrive at the sequence: 12. Ne6 Qb6 13. Nxg7+ Kf8 14. Qf3 Kxg7 15. Be3 Qd6 16. O-O Rf8 17. Rad1. where White seems to have big attack.

However, none of this moves is really forced, Black could chose other ways, like: 14... Bxb5 15. Bh6 Kg8 16. Qh3 Nc6 (or Nd7) 17. O-O-O or 16. O-O-O?! (or Nd7) Nc6?! A unstable position to analyse during the game.

In a simultaneous, Tal would not risk himself in such territory, where he could fail, he needn't it, so he chose the easy way.

Apr-20-23  Lambda: It's amazing how many things Nf5 does. It unleashes the white queen to threaten the black queen and mate on d8, it threatens mate on e7, it controls g7 so there will still be bank rank threats after the bishop moves, it prepares to go to h6 for another checkmate pattern, and it defends the e3 square for the bishop.

FSR: <Allderdice83: Basically, the Levenfish is an inferior line for White, useful only for catching Black in a trap.>

Yes. That is why it is rarely seen these days. Opening Explorer shows that the standard 6.Be3 is played 19 times as often as 6.f4.

Apr-21-23  Granny O Doul: An annoying thing about the book AND the miniseries "Queen's Gambit" is that the Levenfish is discussed as an option for Black and not White. Aside from the inaccuracy, "Dragon" just sounds much cooler; it would be a much smaller deal if they'd misidentified the Scheveningen.

I play the Levenfish in blitz, but if Black plays 6...Nc6, I go back into a classical with 7. Be3; if they play 6...Bg7, they don't usually follow with the best line but if they do, I'll do something different the next time, if there is one, but with the size of the main playing sites today there is always a significant chance you'll never face the opponent again.

I guess Ermolin is a form of (Y)ermolinsky.

It is also mentioned several times, giving one the impression that it's a very important line. It's not. The book is somewhat marred by the fact that Walter Tevis was a weak player. The miniseries, which had very strong players as consultants, mostly avoids Tevis's infelicities, but falls down in this one minor respect. And I agree that replacing references to <the Levenfish Variation> with <the Dragon Variation> would have been a big improvement.

Oct-09-23  Messiah: Terrible pun, excellent game.
