Dec-08-03  Catfriend: As long as I know, probably one of Shlechter's best games! I really liked the elegant way white achieves a better game (all the dance started by 15.B:h7+!). I think a modern GM would play 20.b6, strangling black. 21..g6? - I can't understand why it's good at all!
Somebody - explain me the general idea of Marco's plan! If my enemy would have stuck such a rook ob b6, I would do everything to annihilate it! Here, it isn't that difficult to refuce Rb6's power - just pose a rook on b8. R:Bc6!! is a great, extremely pretty combination. 28.N:d5!! is the best continuation - 29.Rb6+! is winning (usong the same idea of N:d5) but less effectively.

Black can't put a rook on b8 at move 21 because then White exchanges rooks and plays Qh8+. Marco played ...g6 so his queen could cover h8.

Wonderful play from Schlechter, but Marco butchered the opening.

fredthebear: This game is #31 in the classic chess book "Masters of the Chessboard" by Richard Reti. Carl Schlecter was a fantastic chess player and a gentleman, it is said. Unfortunately, Schlecter has a reputation for being a draw master, but so many of his games are beautiful examples of attack. He defeated many great players. Do study his games!
