Kibitzer's Corner
Dec-17-05  Mabashibuku: Korchnoi's 29. Ng6!? transforms a positional struggle into a wild tactical shootout with multiple passed pawns for both sides. In the end, the old master's bravado pays off against his young opponent.
Aug-17-08  whiteshark: A really complicated position. Kortschnoj sacrificed a bishop to destroy blacks pawnshield on the kingside. White has 4 connected passers.

Position after <37.f5>

With <37...d4! cxd4 Qxd4 > black is creating/starting a powerful counterplay that reduces white|s pressure.

Apr-04-12  JoergWalter: Korchnoi's 50.a4 is a great move followed up with 51...e7 as these continuations will loose on the spot

50....Bxa4 51.Rxd3+
50....Ba6 51.Rd7+
50....Bc4 51.Rd7+ Kc6 52.b5+ Kb6 53.Rdxd3

50....d2 51.axb5 Nxb5 52.Rd7+ Kc6 53.Bg2+ Kb6 54.bxa5+ Kxa5 55.Be4

Salov's 50....Nd5 is the only reasonable alternative. Now, after 51.e7 Nxe7 looses, too.

Korchnoi now played 29. Ng6!
I have a feeling that at some earlier time in his long career VK had arrived at a similar position to this, possibly in a simultaneous game or a blitz game, and he had tried the same sort of sacrifice and it had come off.

29. Ng6 is more of a Tal-like sacrifice than a Korchnoi one, and I don't think VK would have tried it without definite knowledge that it would not lose.

Anyway, <nelech: grandiose battle !> really sums the game up well.

Oct-27-17  electrocloud: I remember Salov referring to Korchnoi's 29.Ng6 as a shock and a complete momentum reversal in his comments in New In Chess back in 1991, and being inspired by it in his choice of 17.Bf6 in the game Salov vs Beliavsky, 1991
Oct-27-17  cunctatorg: Scorer Korchnoi or what? Help me, I ain't a native English speaker...
Oct-27-17  cunctatorg: Well, I made use of Google Translator regarding both Skorcher and (!) Scorcher!

Henceforth your help is ... needed not...

Oct-27-17  kevin86: white's pawns are irresistable!
Oct-27-17  Ironmanth: What a game! Victor is brilliant in this contest.
