57. Kxg1 Bxf8 and White wins less material than in the actual game.

Premium Chessgames Member thegoodanarchist: So many dreadful CRAP games have been GOTD but this has not been?

Shameful! Chessgames.com please stop with your GOTD selections until you make this one the very next one!>

And five years on, still not GOTD!

However, I proposed a very nice GOTD title for it:

"Crime and Punishment". And I submitted it in the pun submission page.

Why the title?

It is because of what did Gary said about this game:

<Caissa, the goddess of chess, had punished me for my conservative play, for betraying my nature.>

<Sargon> please check the pun submission data. Thank you in advance.

Feb-16-20  Mountain1: nice game K

HeMateMe: Superb game. We haven't seen such swagger in recent WC games.

What is the 'crime' in the pun, a bad pawn capture somewhere?

Strange how whites queen blockaded the position for much of the game.

Feb-16-20  areknames: Brilliant pun for a classic game, just like Dostoevsky's Crime and Punishment is a classic of Russian literature. Well done, < thegoodanarchist>.

MissScarlett: How is it a brilliant pun? It's not even a pun! Or if admitted, a criminally bad one.
Feb-16-20  areknames: <MissScarlett> Not sure if you're joking or trolling or whatever but in any case don't be silly, of course it's a pun and a bloody good one at that.
Feb-16-20  morfishine: Whats the 1st 3 letters of Punishment?

There's the pun!

Feb-16-20  razetime: Why on Earth is 50.R7f3 not a blunder¿!
Feb-16-20  thegoodanarchist: <areknames>

Thank you for your kind words!

<MissScarlett>

Thanks for trolling.

<morfishine>

Thanks for your observation, I had not thought of that.

MissScarlett: It's still not a pun. I'm surrounded by dunderheads.

OhioChessFan: It's a passable pun, wouldn't call it great. Wonderful game.

MissScarlett: Explain this alleged pun.....there's no play on words...neither player is named Rodion Romanovich Raskolnikov....the idea of a player being punished for bad play has universal applicability....so where precisely is this alleged pun? It's total bollocks!

HeMateMe: this pun was used before. In a Fischer-Spassky game I think Fischer takes the 'poisoned pawn' in a Sicilian and loses the game.

I thought the software here blocks puns being used twice? I've submitted a couple of things that bounced because someone else had put it in.

perfidious: <HMM>, that was the notorious eleventh game.
Feb-16-20  areknames: <neither player is named Rodion Romanovich Raskolnikov> Everyone knows that Raskolnikov was knocked out in the Candidates Tournament.

beatgiant: "Crime and Punishment" is an anagram for "Putinnn shed Crimmea" so maybe some kind of sly reference to the fact that both the players have been in Russian politics? Or am I just suffering from Kremlinology Syndrome?

MissScarlett: This pun is now deader than the old pawnbroker. I just hope Lizaveta doesn't turn up.
Feb-17-20  thegoodanarchist: <MissScarlett>

If you’re surrounded by dunderheads maybe you should find a new apartment

Apr-02-20  mikealando: Pun-ishment is the crime of unleashing beleaguered puns.😄
Jul-18-20  Howard: For the record, the result of this game actually made the front page of the New York Times ! The article had pictures of both Karpov and Kasparov, plus it had diagrams of both where the blunder took place, plus also the final position.

The NYT would have been literally the only newspaper in the country that would have provided that kind of coverage !

  jffun1958: 50.R7f3 IMHO is a blunder and not a rook sac. :-)
Mar-31-24  mk volkov: <MissScarlett <there's no play on words...>>

Play on words isn't necessary in every title, nevertheless, this title is uninteresting.

Mar-31-24  mk volkov: Anyway, Miss Scarlett from Venetica, your title "Old McDonnell had a charm" is the best title in existence.
Sep-16-24  tonsillolith: <Play on words isn't necessary in every title, nevertheless, this title is uninteresting.>

No, but if we want to <call it a pun>, without changing the meaning of the term, then we must.

I'm afraid I'll have to side with MissScarlett on this one.
