Jan-02-07  moppa: Strange things happen in a nightshift. I came home, solved a monday puzzle, checked the GOTD and after that it was the time for a Tuesday puzzle!

Final position is a helpful pattern to remember.

Jan-02-07  mugmon777: great story
Jan-02-07  chessmoron: What a wonderful rook sac and the mate is pretty. 23. Bxb3 is also a crucial move though and I got as well.
Jan-02-07  vibes43: Easier than Monday because not so many possibilities. Having seen similar sacs in earlier puzzles to divert the king allowing the Q take over helped as well. Thanks for another good puzzle.
Jan-02-07  goldfarbdj: For some reason I have trouble with Tuesday puzzles. But I got this one.
Jan-02-07  The17thPawn: Seems like more than one way to mate exists after 22..Qa5 but Maroczy's 23rd move looks most efficient.
Jan-02-07  Jole: what about 21... Qa5 where 22.Kc2 is answered by BxB3+, KxB, Qa4# and if 22.Qd1, then Qa2, Kc2 then Bxb3 wins queen-sure it aint as quick as mate, but the position is won (most other moves answered with Bxb3)
Jan-02-07  benlude: Jole: 21...Qa5 22. Kc2 Bxb3+ 23. Kxb3 Qa4+ its not mate: 24. Kc4.
Jan-02-07  FLCLlove: No where near as effecient, especially since Qa4 isn't mate. White's King still has c4 available, leaving black two pawns down. Mate is almost inevitable though.
Jan-02-07  ahmadov: I found this after thinking a while but it seemed to me more difficult than usual Tuesday puzzles.
Jan-02-07  ahmadov: Now, after finding this puzzle I started thinking that in real games the more important task is creating such positions than finding mates in them.
Jan-02-07  greensfield: Found this one straight away, easier than yesterdays. Great Rook sac.
Jan-02-07  Chris1Clark: Damn had a winning line that was a bit more complex. Actual solution is nicer. Mine was 21...Qa7 22. Qxb4 Qa2+ 23. Kc2 Bxb3+ 24. Kd2 Qxb2+ 25. Ke1 Qxc1+ etc
Jan-02-07  Soltari: I was determent to solve this one after a failed monday's. And I got it quite quickly.
Jan-02-07  DeepThought: Still got 100% in 2007 :-)
Jan-02-07  uuft: Just joining the 100%-club here for a few days, too... :) Tuesday-business as usual - roundabout ten seconds.
Jan-02-07  jahhaj: Three move sequence ending with a quiet move? A bit hard for Tuesday.

I'd like to see more endgame puzzles in 2007. I really enjoyed the week of pawn endings we had recently.

Jan-02-07  AdrianP: Nice. This sort of rook sac should be second nature to anyone who plays the Najdorf as Black. It should be noted that it is because White's R and Q block the kings flight squares that this sac works.
Jan-02-07  Towershield: I would've played <22.-Ra8+> 23.Kb1 Ra1+ 24.Kxa1 Qa5+ 25.Kb1 Bxb3 so as to make fun of my opponent :P

Phony Benoni: The King's Gambit produces another brillancy.
Jan-02-07  aldehyde: there is an alter solution to this puzzle too.
21. Qa5 has its own surprises. i would like you to chk it out.
Jan-02-07  aldehyde: black shouldn't have castled long. a screwed pawn structure on queen's side isnt a wall enough to defend
Jan-02-07  chopin4525: another puzzle solved^____^
Jan-02-07  aazqua: Talk about "castling into it". This was pretty much castle resign for white. I'd say this was a little tough for Tuesday but still nice and easy. THe only thing that makes it tough is the temptation of a queen sac to open the a1 square for the rook, but of course q*q is the response for white.
Jan-02-07  ax2kool: yay! i got this one....BTW has Kings Gambit worked for anyone except for Morphy?
