Checkmate 2003 Labeled by Fredthebear
Compiled by fredthebear
--*--

Games played until checkmate. Fredthebear will eventually finish labeling the various checkmate patterns as a training exercise now and then. The games are grouped by ECO code A-E.

How to study these checkmates -- just the checkmates? Click the cursor 3-4 moves from the end of the scoresheet (listed below the board). The board position will pop up that particular click position late in the game, creating a puzzle for the reader to solve. For example, if the game lasted 40 moves, click the cursor on move 37 and that position of the 37th move will appear on the board. (This expeditiously allows the puzzle solver to skip moves 1-36.) Find the mate in three moves by clicking on the scoresheet three moves from the end of the game.

Who's turn to move? It does not matter. Find the best move for BOTH colors (this is the proper way to play chess); one color will likely be threatening checkmate. Keep in mind that a forced mate might not be available to either color. A sudden blunder at the finish allows checkmate to occur in a flash. The queen is a bloody murderer!

Typically, most masters see the unstoppable checkmate coming and resign before it happens. When a checkmate actually occurs, the loser was either taken by surprise, or graciously granted the winner the opportunity to play out a beautiful mating combination.

Some players have been taught to never resign; keep playing until there is a forced conclusion. There is nothing wrong with fighting to the finish, but when playing a master it is considered good etiquette to resign in a completely lost position. (Fredthebear always keeps stalemate possibilities in mind, as a draw is better than a loss.) Fredthebear usually does not resign immediately after dropping a piece, but he would against a great player like Bobby Fischer or Garry Kasparov!

* Checkmate patterns:
Game Collection: Checkmate: Checkmate Patterns A few of the checkmate pattern names appear to be made up by the book's author, but the majority are accurately named and worthwhile for study purposes. For example, Corner Mate w/a rook supported by a bishop should be properly called Mayet's Mate. That pattern is common and needs to be instantly recalled, so why haggle over it's name? The link has an excellent list of mating patterns to know.

A homework assignment.

I'll come back with examples and descriptions later, but off the top of my head (and without revisiting the wiki page) the following are missing or not properly explained:

(Note - using my naming conventions, not sure if there are better alternatives, or any convention, except as noted)

Railroad Mates - one of my favorites of course, Q+R vs. K. Very useful, and common once you recognize it.

Q+B Escalator - not as common, maybe more fun though. High level, like knowing B+N checkmate.

V.V.Arabian - following Tisdell's convention. R+N, extremely common and useful.

Q+B Dovetail - Abstraction of dovetail mate (instead of pawns blocking the bishop does). Also common and useful.

Q+B Edge Mate - queen three squares off edge (e.g. on 3rd rank) - Q+B diagonals cross - common enough to be useful. This is a Balestra Mate.

Chimney Mates - the name is well used, the mates somewhat rare, but oh so fun.

Suffocation Mates - I think wiki has this category. Don't know about wiki's distinction oif a bishop covering the extra escape square vs. some other piece. The main idea is to accommodate the mates that are oh-so-close to being smother mates.

One cavaet about the Wiki categories that I've been meaning to ask here for some time concerns the directionality of some of the "dovetail" mates. I don't see much utility in subdividing a Dovetail into Cozio's Mate (I think that's what I remember). I think the distinction of whether the king is nearer the edge of the board vs. the queen(*) is irrelevant to the way the mate works."

Why yes, three it is.

Does this remind you of Athos, Porthos and Aramis, or Moe, Larry, and Curly? Maybe Alnitak, Mintaka, and Alnilam, or TV brothers Mike, Robbie, and Chip?

Some might remember Shelley Duvall, Sissy Spacek and Janice Rule, or farther back the Andrews Sisters. There was Peter, Paul & Mary; Crosby, Stills & Nash; the Supremes; Run DMC; the Police; Green Day; Beastie Boys; Nirvana; TLC; Dixie Chicks; ZZ Top; Rush; the Pointer Sisters; Emerson, Lake & Palmer; Tony Orlando and Dawn (have a listen: https://www.bing.com/videos/search?... ); and brothers Barry, Robin, and Maurice Gibb - the Bee Gees ! ! ! (Yeah, FTB does feel like Harry at the moment.)

The tragic plane crash of 1959 was "The Day the Music Died": Wikipedia article: The Day the Music Died We lost Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens, and J.P. Richardson (The Big Bopper). Singer/song writer Don McLean sings about it here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iX_...

Let's pick up the pace. How about the record setting golden trio of Kevin Durant, Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson? Farther back was Chris Mullin, Mitch Richmond, and Tim Hardaway. Most Left Coast fans were probably thinking of the Hall of Famers Jerry West, Elgin Baylor and Wilt Chamberlain, or these '80's Lakers Kareem Abdul-Jabaar, Jamaal Wilkes, and Ervin Magic Johnson.

Back East, there was Ron Francis, Jaromir Jagr, and Mario Lemieux as well as Mike Bossy, Clark Gillies, and Brian Trottier. Maybe Johnny Bucyk, Phil Esposito, and Bobby Orr yet undoubtedly Paul Coffey, Mark Messier, and Wayne Gretzky.

Time remembers darker days, the meetings of the Allied "Big Three"— Franklin D. Roosevelt/Harry Truman, Joseph Stalin, and Winston Churchill. Before them Emanual Lasker, Jose R. Capablanca, and Alexander Alekhine ruled the 64 squares. Today, it's AOC's three branches of American government that count: https://www.dailywire.com/news/watc...

That's nothing like the Triple Crown of American horse racing: Kentucky Derby, Preakness Stakes, and Belmont Stakes.

Skyward, there will always be a place in history for Neil Armstrong, Edwin 'Buzz' Aldrin, and Michael Collins. Greek mythology tells of Zeus, Poseidon, and Hades. Ah, but it's the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit who reign supreme. See Matthew 28:19.

Of course <whiteshark> being a whiteshark could be thinking of Brody, Quint, and Hooper singing on the boat... https://www.bing.com/videos/search?...

The Wallet

From heaven, one day, did Jupiter proclaim,
"Let all that live before my throne appear,
And there if any one has anything to blame,
In matter, form, or texture of his frame,
He may bring forth his grievance without fear.
Redress shall instantly be given to each.
Come, monkey, now, first let us have your speech. You see these quadrupeds, your brothers;
Comparing, then, yourself with others,
Are you well satisfied?" "And why not?"
Says Jock. "Haven't I four trotters with the rest? Is not my visage comely as the best?
But this my brother Bruin, is a blot
On your creation fair;
And sooner than be painted I had be shot,
Were I, great sire, a bear."
The bear approaching, does he make complaint?
Not he; – himself he lauds without restraint.
The elephant he needs must criticize;
To crop his ears and stretch his tail were wise; A creature he of huge, misshapen size.
The elephant, though famed as beast judicious,
While on his own account he had no wishes,
Pronounced dame whale too big to suit his taste; Of flesh and fat she was a perfect waste.
The little ant, again, pronounced the gnat too wee; To such a speck, a vast colossus she.
Each censured by the rest, himself content,
Back to their homes all living things were sent. Such folly lives yet with human fools.
For others lynxes, for ourselves but moles.
Great blemishes in other men we spy,
Which in ourselves we pass most kindly by.
As in this world we're but way-farers,
Kind Heaven has made us wallet-bearers.
The pouch behind our own defects must store,
The faults of others lodge in that before.

"Many people perceive the merit of a manuscript which is read to them, but will not declare themselves in its favor until they see what success it has in the world when printed, or what intelligent men will say about it. They do not like to risk their opinion, and they want to be carried away by the crowd and dragged along by the multitude. Then they say that they were amongst the first who approved of that work, and the general public shares their opinion. Such men lose the best opportunities of convincing us that they are intelligent, clever, and first-rate critics, and can really discover what is good and what is better. A fine work falls into their hands; it is an author's first book before he has got any great name; there is nothing to prepossess anyone in his favor, and by applauding his writings one does not court or flatter the great. Zelotes, you are not required to cry out: "This is a masterpiece; human intelligence never went farther; the human speech cannot soar higher; henceforward we will judge of no one's taste but by what he thinks of this book." Such exaggerated and offensive expressions are only employed by postulants for pensions or benefices and are even injurious to what is really commendable and what one wishes to praise. Why not merely say—"That's a good book?" It is true you say it when the whole of France has approved of it, and foreigners as well as your own countrymen, when it is printed all over Europe and has been translated into several languages, but then it is too late." ― Jean de La Bruyère

"Time, which strengthens friendship, weakens love." ― Jean de La Bruyère

"If it is true that one is poor on account of all the things one wants, the ambitious and the avaricious languish in extreme poverty." ― Jean de La Bruyère

"A wise man is cured of ambition by ambition itself; his aim is so exalted that riches, office, fortune, and favor cannot satisfy him." ― Jean de La Bruyère

"There is no road too long to the man who advances deliberately and without undue haste; there are no honors too distant to the man who prepares himself for them with patience." ― Jean de La Bruyère

"The great charm of conversation consists less in the display of one's own wit and intelligence than in the power to draw forth the resources of others; he who leaves you after a long conversation, pleased with himself and the part he has taken in the discourse, will be your warmest admirer. Men do not care to admire you, they wish you to be pleased with them; they do not seek for instruction or even amusement from your discourse, but they do wish you to be made acquainted with their talents and powers of conversation, and the true man of genius will delicately make all who come in contact with him feel the exquisite satisfaction of knowing that they have appeared to advantage." ― Jean de La Bruyère

"We can recognize the dawn and the decline of love by the uneasiness we feel when alone together." ― Jean de La Bruyère

"A fool is an automaton, a machine with springs which turn him about always in one manner and preserve his equilibrium. He is ever the same and never changes. If you have seen him once you have seen him at every moment and period of his life. He is at best but as the lowing ox or the whistling blackbird. He is fixed and obstinate, I may say, by nature. What appears least in him is his soul; that has neither activity nor energy; it reposes." ― Jean de La Bruyère

"That man is good who does good to others; if he suffers on account of the good he does, he is very good; if he suffers at the hands of those to whom he has done good, then his goodness is so great that it could be enhanced only by greater sufferings; and if he should die at their hands, his virtue can go no further: it is heroic, it is perfect" ― Jean de La Bruyère

"The very essence of politeness is to take care that by our words and actions we make other people pleased with us as well as with themselves." ― Jean de La Bruyère

"When you see a good move – WAIT! – look for a better one." ― Emanuel Lasker The Portuguese chess player and author Pedro Damiano (1480–1544) first wrote this in his book "Questo libro e da imparare giocare a scachi et de li partiti" published in Rome, Italy, in 1512.

"It's entirely possible that Capa could not imagine that there could be a better move than one he thought was good and he was usually right." ― Mike Franett

"Capablanca's games generally take the following course: he begins with a series of extremely fine prophylactic maneuvers, which neutralize his opponent's attempts to complicate the game; he then proceeds, slowly but surely, to set up an attacking position. This attacking position, after a series of simplifications, is transformed into a favorable endgame, which he conducts with matchless technique." ― Aaron Nimzowitsch

"What others could not see in a month's study, he (Capablanca) saw at a glance." ― Reuben Fine

"Capablanca invariably chose the right option, no matter how intricate the position." ― Garry Kasparov.

"He (Capablanca) had the totally undeserved reputation of being the greatest living endgame player. His trick was to keep his openings simple and then play with such brilliance that it was decided in the middle game before reaching the ending - even though his opponent didn't always know it. His almost complete lack of book knowledge forced him to push harder to squeeze the utmost out of every position." ― Bobby Fischer

"A passed pawn increase in strength as the number of pieces on the board diminishes." ― Jose Raul Capablanca

In Melitopol, terrible terror has been reigning for over a year. It's quiet, you can't see it on the streets - reported CNN. Anyone who has rejected a Russian passport may become a victim of repression. They can't access the hospital, can't function normally. The "incredible" occupant also takes away the land. Arrests and torture, unfortunately, are common practices.

Partisans are engaged in attacking Russian logistics and eliminating collaborators and Russian officers. They actively cooperate with Ukrainian military intelligence (HUR) and are ready for sabotage activities in case the front arrives.

Before the war, Melitopol had a population of 154,000. The city, located in the southeastern part of Ukraine in the Zaporizhzhia region, was occupied by the Russians on March 1, 2022 Eastern Time. Since then, it has been waiting for liberation, but that does not mean that the inhabitants are idle. From the beginning of the war, there has been a partisan movement in and around the city.

"Darkness cannot drive out darkness: only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate: only love can do that." ― Martin Luther King Jr.

"Sometimes the most ordinary things could be made extraordinary, simply by doing them with the right people." ― Elizabeth Green

"Remember Red, hope is a good thing, maybe the best of things, and no good thing ever dies." ― Andy (Tim Robbins), "The Shawshank Redemption"

Psalms 31:24 - Be of good courage, and he shall strengthen your heart, all ye that hope in the LORD.

Luck never gives; it only lends. ~ Scottish Proverb

Lichess has all the same basic offerings as Chess.com: a large community, many game types, tutorials, puzzles, and livestreams. The site has a simple appearance, and it seems built to get you where you want to go in as few clicks as possible. You can create an account, but if you're not concerned with tracking your games and finding other players at your level, there's no need to log in. Just fire up a new game, try some puzzles, or watch a chess streamer play three-minute games while listening to techno and chatting with the comments section.
