Aug-08-20  Ilkka Salonen: Finland fails to even field a team! What is going on? I think in many cases playing conditions could be subpar due to factors such as connection problems, malware and harrasment of various kinds or just annoyances of urban environment such as rennovation noises, poor air quality etc. In chess tournaments players usually stay at same hotels, and it diminishes risk of conditions favoring some players and being more of a hindrance to others. There could be something done to standardize conditions in online events too.
Aug-08-20  Octavia: i think its great that Fide decided to let the lowest teams play first. In each section (5 in all) all teams play each other & in the end the best 3 move up to the next level - correct?

Some of the players have never played online before & others have never played a stronger player than their parents. So, of course, they make lots of mistakes - so what? It's nice that they're allowed to play. Some of them will study chess seriously & come back next time stronger.

Aug-11-20  waustad: Some of the howlers I see remind me of games I’ve played in the bar, taking all comers.
Aug-17-20  Octavia: Keti Arakhamia got 11/12 ! She lost no games & drew only 2! Marvelous as ever!
Aug-17-20  jith1207: <Keti Arakhamia got 11/12 ! She lost no games & drew only 2>

If she drew twice, wouldn't that be 11/13?

Or is it 11.5/12?

Anyway, that's a great event for Keti.

10 wins + 2 draws = 10*1 + 2*0.5 = 11, so I'm not understanding your point.
Aug-17-20  jith1207: You're right, thanks <beatgiant>. I was writing in half sleep, should've sobered up
Aug-20-20  Nosnibor: Why is Giri doing so badly? After 5 games he has three losses, one draw and one solitary win despite being the highest rated player in this event.

MissScarlett: Has he been playing the French?
Aug-21-20  Octavia: <If she drew twice, wouldn't that be 11/13?> she won 10 & had 2 draws therefore 12 games played & 11 pts gained
Aug-29-20  jith1207: So India is in finals?

Looks like USA Vs Russia in other semis..

And Poland knocked out Azerbaijan, then almost did the same to India. In Both matches, Poland won the first round, the matches went on to tiebreakers but Poland faltered at the last hurdle on the road to finals.

Aug-29-20  Nosnibor: <savage sanctuary> There are actually 8 Mohammed`s who competed. Mohammed Anis Achorr is not on your list!

MissScarlett: <India and Russia have been declared joint winners of a major international chess tournament after two Indian players lost their internet connection during the final round.

Chess Olympiad is being held online for the first time this year because of the coronavirus pandemic.

India launched an appeal after two of its players lost connection to their games and forfeited on time on Sunday.

Officials said these were "unprecedented circumstances.>

Russian hackers foiled....

Aug-30-20  carpovius: <Russian hackers foiled... > be aware Ms of next elections and brexits to the hell)))

Rusdia-India 4.5:1.5. Even after "hacker attack" when 2 hindus "lost connection" (sic!) and then lost on time the score Russia:India 4.5:3.5

Someone is idiot here. My guess it is Dvorkovich to give gold medals to the loosers.

MissScarlett: <#ChessOlympiad Daniil Dubov to Emil Sutovsky: "It was a failure because you don’t call such a circus an Olympiad.">

https://twitter.com/mikhail_golubev...

I feel a bit sorry for Sutovsky; he's often the public face of <FIDE>. Normally, he fights his corner pretty well, but Dubov's loaded up a flurry of shots...

Aug-31-20  metatron2: I agree with Dubov that dividing the gold was a bad fide decision, and I wouldn't call such a circus an Olympiad as well, but for different reasons:

Why put such strange restrictions on the teams? 2 men 2 women 1 boy and one girl? does this have anything to do with chess Olympiad? no connection what so ever.

And all these stages and groups of teams, part of them go directly to higher stages etc. Could anyone follow this mess? does this format have anything to do with chess Olympiad? (no)

Why didn't fide just let the countries bring their best players, and let their teams play an online swiss tourney like it's always done in chess Olympiads (other than the online part) ?

I don't get it. In any case I didn't follow that "Olympiad" at all, and only read about its final now.

MissScarlett: I guess the Russians are especially miffed because the decision is indicative of a shift in chess politics toward Asia. I understand this event was quite a big deal in India, and FIDE always have an eye to new financial opportunities.
Sep-01-20  carpovius: Runet named after the final FIDE president Dvorkovich <DURAKOVICH> (durak is dumb, @#$%@#$% in Russian)
Sep-01-20  jith1207: <. I understand this event was quite a big deal in India>

There's no such a thing in India.

Any rare Indian victory in any sport makes a flash always, and Indian chess circuit is going to be celebrating this Olympiad, but when we broadly speak about <India>, there was no such thing even after Vishy became the World Champion. And, not sure if financial assistance for chess is going to flow for India or FIDE, because of this.

Even as this Olympiad was going on, the trending news was that the recently announced highest sportspersons award in India is continuing to ignore Chess Grandmasters for a number of years, which started mainly due to a Chessbase report. And this victory only highlights how the government and general population don't have much going on for chess in India.

I know it's juicy topic to make such statements here as if FIDE is turning into a golden market like <Bollywood> and away from Russia or to say <oh it's quite a big deal there> when you actually have no idea about that, but that's not a thing here.

Sep-01-20  carpovius: India wins Armenia. India wins Russia. India is the most intellectual nation in the world. 200%
Sep-27-20  siggemannen: So, who won this and why?
