May-31-06 | | jhoro: Shredder went for draw by move repetition at move 20 against ParSOS. Those engines should get some conditioning from Topalov. They are so young, but so afraid not to lose. |
|
May-31-06 | | Dionyseus: Standings after round 10:
1. Junior 8/10
2-3 Shredder 7.5/10
Rybka 7.5/10
4. Zappa 7.0/10
One more round remaining, it will be played tomorrow, tiebreaks afterwards if necessary. |
|
May-31-06 | | chessmoron: Any one has Zap! Chess (the commercial Zappa engine from chessbase)? Is it any good? |
|
May-31-06 | | CapablancaFan: Shredder is a very hard program to defeat. It's record even against otherrograms is impressive. |
|
Jun-01-06 | | borisbadenoff: As Junior has won his game against IsiChess.
Junior is the new WCC-Champion with 9/11.
Shredder being just half a point behind with 8.5/11. Rybka will probably also make the full point. Sharing the second place with Shredder |
|
Jun-01-06 | | jhoro: Hardware according to the official website. What strikes me is that Zappa uses a 1.6MHz notebook with 512M memory. Zap!Chess would've done much better on a 4x2 AMD PROGRAM: HARDWARE, TABLEBASES
Chaturanga: 1x1 Intel 3.2GHz, No
Chiron: 1x1 AMD 2.2GHz, No
Crafty: 4x2 AMD 2.4GHz, Yes
DIEP: 2x2 AMD 2.4GHz, Yes
Delphi: 1x1 Intel 3.0GHz, No
ETABETA: 1x1 Intel 3.0GHz, No
FIBChess: 1x1 AMD 2 GHz, No
Ikarus: 2x2 AMD 1.8GHz, Yes
IsiChess: MMX: 1x1 AMD 2.2GHz, No
Jonny: 1x2 AMD 2.5GHz, Yes
Junior: 2x2 Intel 3 GHz, Yes
ParSOS: 1x1 AMD 2 GHz, No
Rajlich: 4x2 AMD 2.4GHz, No
Shredder: 4x2 AMD 2.6GHz, Yes
Spike: 2x2 AMD 2.0GHz, Yes
Uragano3d: 1x1 AMD 2 GHz, No
Zappa: 512x1 Intel 1.6GHz, No

Jun-01-06 | | WillC21: <jhoro> I think you are mistaken. The chart you provided says nothing about memory, but rather appears to list cores. For example, Shredder and Rajlich are listed at 8 cores(Dual Corex4), Junior is listed at 4(Dual Corex2). By extension, we can imply that Zappa was running on 512 single core processors. Memory, an MB(or GB figure) is absent from the table altogether, although clock frequency(GHz) is provided. Zappa was, I think, therefore the fastest there. |
|
Jun-01-06 | | jhoro: 512-node SMP machine! I really doubt. Otherwise you were correct that I was guessing about the meaning of this 512 number. |
|
Jun-01-06 | | jhoro: <WillC21>, I now think you were correct. That is what I found on Zappa's home page: <NCSA
As I am now a graduate student in Computer Science at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, I managed to get some time on NCSA's Cobalt supercomputer, an SGI Altix 3700 with 1024 1.6GHZ Itanium2 processors. The machine ranks 60th in the world on the Top500.org list and is so powerful that even the photographs are 18MB in size. Sadly, the machine is split into two parts and Zappa can only use 512 processors at once, but I estimate that it will be able to achieve a search speed of over 100 million positions per second, roughly equivalent to Deep Blue (of course, vastly superior in terms of actual play). I'd also like to take the time to put out a big thank-you to the NCSA helpdesk. I associate most helpdesks with week-long delays and gross incompetence, but the NCSA folks are both bright and hard-working. Thanks a lot!

Jun-02-06 | | chessmoron: <jhoro> How do you get Toga's book into the Arena interface? It only takes .abk not .bin. I just wish chessbase could make a free Fritz interface without any engines. |

Jun-03-06 | | jhoro: <chessmoron: How do you get Toga's book into the Arena interface?> Place the .bin book(s) in the Toga folder. Make Toga active and press Ctrl+1 (can be accessed thru the menus or on rightclick). The bin book is there along with other options. Maybe it is possible to have full path, but I haven't tried it. |
|
Jun-03-06 | | Marmot PFL: Rybka is an excellent program, but I believe this was its first championship and the pressure may have been too much. Junior and shredder have been there before - experience counts. |
|
Jun-03-06 | | cotdt: yeah, Rybka was too nervous and lost against shredder |
|
Jun-03-06 | | chessmoron: <Marmot PFL>, <cotdt>. Remember guys, the engine used in the Olympiad was not Rybka, it was Rajlich, a beta version. So I'm not that worried, it's just some bad luck on Vas' (the creator's) part. |

Jun-05-06 | | neosystems: " chessmoron: <jhoro> How do you get Toga's book into the Arena interface? It only takes .abk not .bin. I just wish chessbase could make a free Fritz interface without any engines." Mount it on a virtual drive. There are many DVD burning softwares that allow you to do this. " chessmoron: What's the best free chess software out there?" My favorite is Fritz (Deep Fritz 8 is what I have currently). However, chessbase provides many excellent alternatives such as (Deep) Shredder, Zappa (Zap! Chess), (Deep) Junior, HIARCS, ChessTiger. Are Rybka or Fruit commercially available? |
