Russian Championship (2001)

The 54th Russian Championship tournament was a 60-player 9-round Swiss held in Elista, Russia, 30 April - 8 May 2001. Time control: 75 minutes for the first 40 moves, then 15 more minutes to the end of the game, with 30 seconds added per move from move 1. Announced prize fund: USD 30.000. Games started at 4 pm local time. Chief arbiter: Arkady Vasiliev. Number of games played: 270.

Alexander Motylev won on tiebreak ahead of Lastin, both with 6.5/9. Kharlov was 3rd with 6/9. The top 17 players (by truncated Buchholz score for those with 5.5 points) qualified for participation in the European Championship (2001).
