Reykjavik Open (1998)

The 18th Reykjavik Open (officially: XVIII Reykjavik International) was held in Reykjavik, Iceland, 10-18 March 1998. A 66-player 9-round Swiss tournament, it was organized by the Reykjavik Chess Club. It was also the first event of the VISA Nordic Grand Prix 1998-1999 tournament series. Time control: 120 minutes for the first 40 moves, followed by 60 more minutes for the next 20 moves, then 30 more minutes to finish the game. Rounds 1-8 started at 5 pm, round 9 at 1 pm. Prize fund: 15,000 USD. First prize 5,000 USD, 2nd prize 3,000 USD, 3rd price 2,000 USD. Number of games played: 295.

Larry Christiansen won with 7.5/9, ahead of Nick de Firmian (2nd) and Curt Hansen (3rd).
