Introduction
Play in the great annual tournament of the Franklin Chess Club (southeast Eleventh and Sansom streets), will begin tomorrow, and, as before remarked, it promises to be the most interesting chess event in the history of the city. The entries are: M. Morgan, E. Bates, Dr. Barrett, Ed A. White, Arthur Hale, August Priester, H. G. Voigt, H. B. Wells, M. Fisher Wright, W. P. Shipley, E. Stark, W. H. Schultz, J. P. Morgan, W. J. Ferris, A. K. Robinson, Carroll Smyth. (1)

Mr. August Priester is now certain of first place in the tourney of the Franklin Chess Club, southeast corner Eleventh and Sansom streets. His score is 20½ to 3½, with three more games to play. The next best scores are: Bates, 16 to 6; Robinson, 14½ to 7½; Ferris, 14½ to 8½; Barrett, 15½ to 9½. (2)

The home tourney is officially at an end, with the leading scores of: Priester, 22½ to 2½; E. Bates, 18 to 6; Robinson, 17½ to 8½. Mr. Priester's score is a phenomenally good one and "E. Bates" is the nom-de-plume of Mr. John Welsh Young, who is so favorably known as one of our brilliant "Juniors." Mr. Robinson is also a well-known favorite and we shall take some near occasion to further enlarge upon the subject. (3)

Notes
Voigt withdrew after playing four games and his score was dropped. Stark and Smyth withdrew after completing more than fifty percent of their games in the second half of the tournament and all of their games were counted. A number of additional players retired, after the prize winners were established, leaving a number of match-ups unplayed in the final days of the tournament.
