Introduction
The annual tournament of the Franklin Chess Club has been organized and will be governed by the following rules:
I. Entrance for said tournament will close on Saturday, November 14, 1891, and only plays who have paid to the tournament committee prior to that date the entrance fee and signed these rules will be considered as having entered said tournament.
II. Entrance fee will be $6.
III. Each player must play his games with the time fixed by the committee. The time appointed will be shown by a schedule posted in the club room.
IV. The players will be paired by the committee by lot, and the schedule of the order of plays will be annexed to the rules.
V. In the event of a player not playing his games within the time specified, nor giving a valid and reasonable excuse for not doing so, his name at the option of the committee may be stricken from the tournament, and the committee shall pass upon his games.
VI. At the time mutually agreed upon for play between any two players, and one being absent, his opponent may start the absent player's clock, and if said player does not appear with one hour, his game will be scored as won by the player present.
VII. Any player whose game has been forfeited under rule six may appeal to the committee, and upon said player showing sufficient cause for his absence the committee shall order the game to be played at such time with the following week as may be mutually agreed upon by the players.
VIII. Any difference to be referred to any member of the committee present.
IX. Each player must keep a full score of the game, the winner to hand his score to the committee as soon as possible after play ceases. No credit for the game will otherwise be given on the score.
X. In case of a draw the player having first move must hand in the score to the committee.
XI. Draws will count a half game for each player.
XII. Time limit shall be twenty moves per hour. Three games in two weeks shall be played.
All contestants playing their games as provided in the above rules shall at the termination of this tournament receive the sum of $5 each. The first prize shall be a gold medal, emblematic of the championship of 1892. Suitable second and third prizes will also be given. Tournament begins Monday, November 16. (1)
Synopsis
Owing to the interruption caused by the holiday festivities the date of closing the Franklin Chess Club tournament has been postponed to Monday, January 11, giving ample time for the remaining games to be played. Dr. S. R. Barrett withdrew from the tourney after playing three games, namely, drawing with Voigt and losing to Bampton and J. P. Morgan. (2)
The Franklin Chess Club tournament is officially ended, with the following scores: Mr. H. G. Voigt takes first pace and the medal with a score of 7½ wins and 2½ losses. Mr. Mordecai Morgan comes second, with 7 wins and 3 losses. Mr. J. W. Young takes third, with 6½ wins and 3½ losses. This tournament has been remarkable for the liveliness of its games. (3)
