Chessgames.com Chess Event Description
European Junior Championship 1971/72

"... the last round decided everything. Sax faced the Yugoslav Marjanovic, Borngässer Gorchakov. Moreover, the West German player gained an overwhelming advantage early on, ... and although he almost let his opponent go in a time crunch, Sax could not have any illusions for a moment that half a point would be enough to take the lead. In the end, after a six-hour struggle, both leaders won, but according to the competition regulations, the win went to Gyula Sax. ... In the tie for 3rd and 4th place, the bronze medal went to the Bulgarian Velikov. His coach, Master Kaikamdzorov, hopes that the success of the medical student from Sofia will be the beginning of a revival of Bulgarian chess. The majority of the young players have a vast theoretical knowledge and have acquired quite a lot of practical experience. They even take this to an extreme with constant blitz games, and they are already tired of official competition games. At the award ceremony, H. J. Slavekoorde, Secretary General of FIDE, highlighted the success of Hungarian youth chess, which has been repeated year after year since 1968, and conveyed to Gyula Sax the traditional invitation to the master group of this year's IBM and next year's Hoogovens competitions. He also announced that at the next FIDE congress — with the consent of President Euwe — they will propose that not only the winner of the Youth World Championship, but also the winner of the Youth European Championship automatically receive the international master title."
