Chessgames.com Chess Event Description
Hofmann Cup (1995)

The anniversary tournament in August 1995 - 125 years after the tournament chess chapter was opened in Germany and Baden-Baden (see Baden-Baden (1870)) - was a great success in the media. 40 players took part in the Bank Hofmann Cup. Viktor Korchnoi only made a short guest appearance. The Swiss surprisingly lost to German grandmaster Rainer Knaak in the round of 16 of the knockout tournament. With luck, top favorite Anatoly Karpov found himself in the round of the last eight when he pulled his head out of the loop with a 1.5:0.5 win over French grandmaster Anatoly Vaisser. It was only in the final that the Russian FIDE World Champion returned to his usual form and gave Viktor Gavrikov (Switzerland) no chance at 2-0 in the 25-minute quick games. Another milestone on the way to now over 140 tournament victories.
