Jun-14-09  PhilFeeley: Good to see some of the games at last, although a 73% draw rate is pretty high, with too many very short ones.
Jun-14-09  visayanbraindoctor: Links any one?
Jun-14-09  bravado1: I'm not sure if this is the same event, but I think that the line-up was far stronger and diverse last year. Unless it's a different memorial than the one won by Ivanchuk last year.
Jun-14-09  jurado96: I got in from ajedrezinmadrid.com
but not live could'nt get live
good luck
Jun-14-09  larsen959: the only site (I think) is www.capablanca.co.cu (official site of Cuban Chess Federation) but there is no live direct (there are only games in .pgn format) :-((
Jun-14-09  WhiteRook48: but Capablanca didn't die 44 years ago
Jun-14-09  GMNick: Come on Bruzon, are you trying to win or not?
Jun-14-09  visayanbraindoctor: <larsen959> Thanks. You are right though, no live games. That's a peculiar website. It must be the only official website of a Chess Federation (the CCF) that is named after a chessplayer.
Jun-15-09  Kaspablanca: No WhiteRook, Capablanca died in 1942.

Troller: <bravado1> It's the same event. The line-up is quite different from year to year, but the last two years have not been so strong. Ivanchuk won it 2005-06-07, but he didn't participate last year, where Dominguez won it ahead of Amonatov and Khenkin. Previous winners include Najdorf, Smyslov, Larsen, Andersson, Miles, Hübner & Leko (and of course Ivanchuk) as well as many other top players. But also some not that strong GMs such as Hebden and Garcia Palermo, so the strength of the tournament seems pretty uneven from year to year.

But running since 1962 and with these legends as former winners it is of course still a prestigious event.

Jun-15-09  waustad: Thanks cg. They've done a better job getting information out than last year. Didn't Fischer play via telex once, or was that some other event in Cuba?
Jun-15-09  dx9293: <waustad> Yes, Fischer played via telex at the 1965 event, finishing 2nd (can't remember if it was clear or shared) behind Smyslov.

Jun-18-09  GMNick: I think this year's Capablanca Memorial has the dubious honour of being slightly less boring than Bosnia 2009.
Jun-18-09  GMNick: Sorry, now I look back at the Bosnia tournament, this one is MORE boring.
Jun-22-09  percyblakeney: <Come on Bruzon, are you trying to win or not?>

In 2005 Bruzon finished with an even score in Corus A, with Kramnik and Svidler 0.5 point ahead and behind. Nowadays he is showing less fighting spirit, and here he drew with white in 11, 12, 14 and 16 moves (and in 14 and 20 with black).

Troller: Yes, it's strange with Bruzon. Some years ago he seemed as talented as Dominguez (and maybe he is). But in this tournament - at least from the looks of it - he was more interested in getting the tournament over with than playing chess. I'm not against draws, but so many of them here were without any fight, marring the tournament.

I'm happy for Dominguez, though; even if this was not the strongest event he has played, and even if he did not exactly dominate the tournament, he went ahead and had the job done pretty convincingly.

Jun-24-09  percyblakeney: <Troller> At least Bruzon turned up for the final round for the first time in three years :-)
