Jan-08-07 | | percyblakeney: After having played well that far Ivanchuk fell apart quickly in the last blitz game. |
Jan-08-07 | | gorash: nobody is perfect. Leko lost that particular game against Gelfand in which he had good drawing and even winning chances. On the other hand, Ivanchuk hasn't had a single fault so far. well, well he's also human as we can see. nevertheless, both of them had a really good tourney with brilliant play |
Jan-08-07 | | voronin: Congrats to Peter Leko for winning the event! |

Jan-08-07 | | suenteus po 147: <azaris> I was referring to results and not actual game play. |

Jan-09-07 | | edwitten: It would be nice to know what the players said at the press conferences. There are any video or transcript? |
Jan-10-07 | | Pounamu Knight: Unfortunately not, edwitten. Great videos 2 a great tourny tho! Misha Savinov has just postd an xcellent report on the final games at Chessbase. The final lines of the story are more than a little relevent 2 the disgusting xchanges on the Topalov/Kramnik pages here recently. Deep breaths! |
Jan-10-07 | | positionalgenius: Congrats Peter Leko. |
Jan-10-07 | | acirce: <The atmosphere of a classical tournament, regardless of the formula, is very different – dryer, more official, more pretentious ... Rapid elimination events are different in all ways. No rating. No extended pain (lose and you’re out). Much socializing. Finally, a lot of excitement for the public ... Somehow I came across the feeling that chess would do much better if there was no classical chess at all ... the future of classical chess is in real trouble.> Misha Savinov's report at http://www.chessbase.com/newsdetail... was quite disturbing. A rapid event like this one is quite nice but nothing more than that. They are fun to watch but usually adds little of lasting value; they shouldn't be taken too seriously, they have a right to exist but classical chess is the real thing. Lékó taking home the victory in a quick blitz game means very little more than it being very nice for the Hungarian to get the money, the trophy and another confidence boost. But at least it was better than the last time he won an inaugural rapid event (the FIDE Grand Prix) after winning on time as White in a clearly drawn position in the Armageddon game: Leko vs Grischuk, 2002 (check out the moves 50-65) If this is the future of chess, sorry to be a bore but I'm not sure I want to see it. |
Jan-10-07 | | adair10: <acirce> <they have a right to exist but classical chess is the real thing.> Relationship of classical to rapid depends how you look at chess. If you are just concerned with the quality (from theoretical point of view), then I agree. If, however one deems chess as a sport, then rapid is more attractive IMO. In the first case decisive qualities of players are knowledge, memory, experience, better home prep. Blunder or less than optimal move by one of the players brings the value down, even though other player could have been the reason for inaccurate play.In the rapid chess, the weight of psychology, innovation/risk are larger. Like in track and field, 100 m sprint and marathon require totally different set of skills and each of these disciplines has its own fan base, although sprint creates more excitement. So, I am not sure which one is <real thing> |
Jan-10-07 | | Stevens: <acirce> i was also surprised by a couple of viewpoints in that report. also <Morozevich said that rapid has none of it <(creativity in rapid chess)>, and all he tries to do is not to blunder, while Ivanchuk said the thought that rapid chess is much closer to classical than to blitz, and playing a decent rapid game is definitely not a possibility that should be ruled out. If professionals don’t have clear opinion on the subject, the future of classical chess is in real trouble.> from those comments, how does he come to that conclusion?! just because there are differences of opinion over the level of creativity in rapid chess, this means that the future of classical chess is in <real troule>?! rapid chess is fine, it's fun, exciting, maybe more attractive to some, but i hope that chess doesn't succumb to the modern world and it's 10 minute attention span. if only the rapid tournaments get big prize funds, so be it, but if classical chess dies out altogether or becomes the poor relation then i won't be following much either. |
Jan-10-07 | | kellmano: <i hope that chess doesn't succumb to the modern world and it's 10 minute attention span>... I think you're fairly safe on that one. I don't see people in the near future weighing up whether to watch another soap on TV or watch a quick game of blitz chess. |
Jan-10-07 | | boz: Rapid chess is fun to watch live. But the games are usually forgotten soon after they are played. It's a sideshow. Classical games have the potential to live on for centuries. It's like comparing newspapers to great literature. And I don't see that Ivanchuk contradicted Morozevich. Moro said that rapid chess lacks creativity. Ivanchuk didn't say it does. I interpret his words to mean that rapid chess can be comnpared to classical play in that it is possible to play a decent (i.e., error free) game. Blitz on the other hand is often riddled with faults. I think both GMs are correct.
