Sep-10-11
 | | chessgames.com: The games have begun and there is live commentary right now at http://www.livestream.com/uschess. Enjoy! |
Sep-10-11 | | Pyke: Nice, <CG>!
The Saint Louis Chess Club seems to get a lot of interesting events going these days. |
Sep-10-11 | | Blunderdome: I think the girls will take a beating without Polgar on their team. The original lineups were balanced, but obviously whoever replaced Polgar is a step down. |
Sep-10-11 | | BishopofBlunder: Wow, all decisive games in the first round. Some interesting openings as well: the Dutch, Pirc, French Exchange. Nice. |
Sep-11-11
 | | HeMateMe: um...Shouldn't Namamura be playing in the World Cup, to try and make it to the next Candidates matches? |
Sep-11-11 | | WiseWizard: He won't play in the US championship but he'll play here. |
Sep-11-11
 | | Check It Out: It might be a financial decision: play a short tourney in his hometown or play a long one half way across the world. |
Sep-11-11 | | Blunderdome: Yeah, I assume he was willing to play because he lives in St. Louis anyway. Plus, 960 and rapid don't require loads of preparation, and he's not risking any ratings points. I think he's a fan of 960 anyway. |
Sep-11-11 | | Pyke: As I mentioned above I really like the idea of the <Kings vs. Queens> tournament. I also liked the idea of the <Botvinnik Memorial>. But, and I know that this may sound provovative, I think that one should take these sort of tournaments as what they really are: exhibition games to strenghten the popularity of chess. Nothing less, but nothing more.
IS it exciting and fun to watch? Yes, certainly!
But IS it serious? No!
Therefore I think, people should cut Nakamura some slack for paricipating in such an event. Of course people have every right to disagree ... |
Sep-11-11 | | WiseWizard: I thought he only wanted to play the toughest competition. |
Sep-11-11
 | | Check It Out: These are rapid games followed by 960 games? |
Sep-11-11 | | Pyke: <Check It Out: These are rapid games followed by 960 games?> Other way round. First 960, then rapids. (960 now being in progress at the moment) |
Sep-11-11 | | Pyke: 2-2 with one game (Fiero-Cao stil going).
Fiero has some advantage, so it could be that the "Queens" will be narrowing the gap. |
Sep-11-11 | | Pyke: Current standings after the 960 game of the second day: Kings lead with 9 - 6 against the Queens. Rapid games of the second round in about 40 minutes (18:00 St. Louis time) |
Sep-11-11 | | Pyke: Nakamura being lucky, since Anna Zatonskih missed a simple drawing line. |
Sep-11-11 | | Cushion: Men are currently +4. Ben Finegold had a crushing win against Kostinuk in the 960. |
Sep-11-11
 | | HeMateMe: is 960 shuffle chess, where the pieces get dumped out on the board? |
Sep-12-11 | | Blunderdome: By the way, when I commented earlier that Polgar's replacement would put the girls at a disadvantage, I didn't realize that the original lineup had Karpov, who has been replaced by Cao. So the ratings are balanced after all -- each side at an average of 2476. |
Sep-12-11
 | | Check It Out: <Pyke> Thanks. So CG can't post the 960 games? I don't see them. <HMM> 960 chess has that many starting positions available. The king must be placed between the rooks, and bishops have to be on opposite colors. I believe position 518 is the traditional chess starting position. |
Sep-12-11
 | | tpstar: <960> For the longest time, there were only two Fischerandom games in the database: Leko vs Adams, 2001
Leko vs Adams, 2001
Something about how the irregular starting formation ruins the ability to follow the PGN, plus the castling strangeness. Now there are two more: Z Varga vs Morozevich, 2004
A Jakubiec vs Nakamura, 2009
Two Team contests as well:
Team White vs Team Black, 2007
Team White vs Team Black, 2009
Maybe some of these K&Q games will be added? |
Sep-12-11 | | kellmano: Navara likes chess 960, as he says here:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gFpU... |
Sep-12-11
 | | chessgames.com: <Maybe some of these K&Q games will be added?> The only time we can effectively add a Chess960 game is (i) if neither player castles, or (ii) if at least one of the rooks starts off in the corner and the kings start off on e1/e8. We checked the first round games with our fingers crossed, but there was castling in every game. We've got our finger's crossed for the remaining rounds. |
Sep-12-11 | | karban: In my opinion castling should be banned in 960. It is messy with it especially for amateurs. I played couple patzer games and it is so hectic and funny in the beginning that handling with castling is too much to ask, so we agreed not castling. It can be obstacle in popularization this form of chess. The kings are in every case threatened for mate in 10 :). What do you think about it? |
Sep-12-11 | | Pyke: Tuesday 13th is a free day. Kings lead with +10 after today's round. |
Sep-12-11 | | erniecohen: <karban: In my opinion castling should be banned in 960>
How about banning castling in regular chess also? It would be a breath of fresh air. |
