Feb-25-10 | | Justawoodpusher: I wondered recently if the Sicilian is getting more and more busted, so I looked up the database for white and black wins and the draws: <All time>
white wins:35,6
black wins:30,9
draw:33,6
<2009>
white wins:37,2
black wins:29,9
draw:32,8
Although I know this is barely statistically significient it could indicate a trend.
Nevertheless I'll play tomorrow with my team and if there is e4 on the board I will respond c5! |

Feb-25-10 | | Justawoodpusher: <HeMateMe> 1994 there was a tournament in Buenos Aires with the the Sicilian as the general opening.
W.Salov won the tournament, Polgar got the 4. place out of eight. Games are also in the data base. |

Feb-25-10 | | rapidcitychess: I'm a positional player and detest being white. As black I have an array of solid defenses. As white, there is only the Barcza and the QGD. But the Barcza is boring, and the QGD has been replaced by the Slav. Don't get me wrong, I love the Slav defense but not as white. White must thread through the Botvinnik Gambit, and the Merano game. I no longer hear " I want to be white!" Modern defenses have killed the King's pawn opening, and I fear that the Queen's pawn game is next. Please, those chess experts, please give me something to save my favorite defenses, as black and white. I will list them here and put them up for conversation here: King's Pawn, Open Sicilian, Queen's Pawn, and Gruenfeld. Thank you,

Feb-25-10 | | kramputz: What is this big fuss about the Sicilian (I call it the Mafia Defense)? Just play the Rossolimo or Kopec(Bd3) and all the hard work by black is wasted. Capablanca never played it, called it full of holes. |

Feb-25-10 | | just a kid: <rapidcitychess>How about the Slav exchange? (1.d4 d5 2.c4 c6 3.cxd5) |

Feb-25-10 | | ROADDOG: Game 4 - Polgar vs Kaidanov 1-0 in 32 moves. White wins all 4 against the different Sicilians. |

 | | stoy: Capablanca defeated Lasker with a sicilian! Mr. Kramputz should check his references. |
|
Feb-25-10 | | TheFocus: Capablanca's games playing with the Sicilian:
Bohatirchuk - JC, Moscow 1925 win
Merenyi - JC Budapest 1928 win
Nimzowitsch - JC, Carlsbad 1929 draw
Lasker - JC, Moscow 1936 win
Keres - JC, Semmering 1937 win
Milner-Barry - JC, Margate 1939 draw
Four wins and two draws. Served his purposes. |

Feb-25-10 | | Whack8888: <kramputz> Kopec is not very good for White. That is a pretty major opening concession just to avoid the sharp lines. If White wants to be lazy, he can play the Bb5+ Moscow variation, but that, unlike the Rossilimo isnt all that tough for Black. <rapidcitychess> I would recommend playing some gambits with White for a little bit. It will help you get a better feel for aggressive opening play, which will help you make better moves when you play 'positional' openings like the QGD or Slav or what have you. Also, dont worry about studying the gambit lines, just play them and see what happens. Thinking through it for yourself will be better for you than reading it from a book anyway. |

Feb-25-10 | | redwhitechess: We need a rematch, 0-4 ... ooooo!
Here a small observation on Corus 2010 on Sicilian :
<Of all Group A , B and C there are 273 games. The Sicilian being played 80 times mean 29.3 %. The result is 22 White wins, 40 draw and 18 Black wins. Still a balance statistic.>

Feb-26-10 | | A Karpov Fan: This match seems pointless to me, with the level of preparation possible nowadays it is no surprise at all to me White won every game. |
|
Feb-26-10 | | Octavia: <the level of preparation> oughta give black enough time to equalize When does the game start? |
|
Feb-26-10
 | | stoy: So, where are the blitz playoff games? |
|
Feb-26-10 | | kramputz: I,ve read that comment in a book long time ago. <Feb-25-10
stoy: Capablanca defeated Lasker with a sicilian! Mr. Kramputz should check his references.> At least some people did the work for me.It is a good way to start discussion. |

Feb-26-10 | | siamesedream: <So, where are the blitz playoff games?> From Susan's blog:
<The blitz playoff between Judit and Gregory Kaidanov started about 30 minutes ago. Gregory won game 1 of the blitz playoff with White. Judit won game 2.The pair played a final Armageddon game to decide the match. Gregory got White and 6 minutes while Judit had 5 minutes. Judit won the final Armageddon game with Black. Judit won the match by the score of 4-3. There were no draw in the 7 games.> |

Feb-26-10 | | ROADDOG: Did the blitz games have to maintain the Sicilian Theme? |
|
Feb-26-10 | | dumbgai: This match is interesting but the Sicilian Defense isn't scoring very well. |
|
Feb-27-10 | | kramputz: Polgar won the blitz playoff 2-1 |
|
Feb-28-10 | | HolyKnight: I wonder if any sponsor would ever put up 16 grand for a Petrov, Ruy Lopez Berlin match. Boy I bet that would be exciting! |

Feb-28-10
 | | kamalakanta: They should show the blitz games here, too! |
|
Feb-28-10 | | Atking: The blitz games were also sicilian? |
|
Feb-28-10 | | SirChrislov: The lesson to be learned from this experiment is the sissilian is good if black intends to resign in 30 to 40 moves. |
|
Mar-04-10 | | rapidcitychess: Thanks all. Still, i stay away from gambits and sharp lines. |
