  AylerKupp: <<kwid> Unless the purpose for playing this line serves to show how not to play with white.>

I am still of the opinion that the most noteworthy aspect of the game is how well we neutralized his DSB and prevented it from having any impact on the game. That might have contributed to his tardy and unsuccessful attempt to give his DSB more scope by 30.e4, 31.Rf1, and 32.f4. An analysis or video of the game from that perspective would probably be of great interest to anyone who plays 1.b3.

Jan-27-14  parmetd: what an inappropiate punned name for the game. yuck.

  Domdaniel: <JimNorCal> I've also noticed that after OTB games. In the past, post-mortem analysis between the players was the norm -- and if you were lucky, a kibitzing master might throw in some comments. But now people just take the game home to their engines. I agree that something vital is lost. Engine analysis is helpful, of course, but doesn't really substitute for insight into an opponent's thinking.

  perfidious: <JimNorCal> and <chessto play> Worked briefly with Kaidanov at the end of my playing days. Had I continued active play, no doubt I would have learnt a lot from him. As it was, Gregory was a pleasure to talk with. Hope all is well with him.
Jan-27-14  adhitthana: <OhioChessFan: FWIW, I never expect to hear from our opponents after the game.> Yes. What can he say? You guys are amazing!! :)
Jan-27-14  morfishine: <AylerKupp> Thanks for bringing me up to date on GM Simon Kim Williams stating he will offer some PM analysis. From what I've heard and read about GM Simon Kim Williams is if GM Simon Kim Williams says he will do something, GM Simon Kim Williams will do that something. The word of GM Simon Kim Williams is as good as gold.

Estimate that GM Simon Kim Williams will post a concise synopsis that will be of the most general in nature, but lively enough to satisfy the interested parties.

<kwid> Great points on the position after move 8. You know, if one were to view the position as a snapshot, after 5-seconds they may think "Well, White has the crossfire of the Bishops", but after a few moments, it becomes clear that White is already in trouble, and as posted, he faces his King being stuck in the center. He has no effective breaks and his Knights have trouble finding good squares. A good example of gaining space and subsequently a winning lead in development.

Did you see how Aronian got swindled by Van Wely? Aronian vs Van Wely, 2014 He still won the tournament by 1 1/2 points, so I guess he was able to laugh about it.>

I think the word you want is "ambushed."

Aronian will think twice before he employs his London System type 3.Bf4 again against the Dutch. Especially this early in the opening before Black has even committed to either a (..d5) Stonewall or (..d6) Leningrad setup.

Jan-27-14  chesstoplay: Here is an exciting response from CG administrators:

< <chesstoplay>

Kaidanov is great, we would be proud to have him take the Challenge. We do have some GMs (including at least one 2700+ GM) already "on deck" though so I'll have to set that idea aside for now. >

My quick take...

It is even possible thanks to traveling players like < parmetd >,

it might be a Brit!!

Simon Williams will be one of the commentators at this year's Gibraltar Open: http://www.gibraltarchesscongress.c...

I wouldn't expect any comments or analysis about this game from him till sometime after Gibraltar is finished.

Jan-27-14  RandomVisitor: Regarding 15...Nb4 being a "strong" move according the GMSKW, I have gone back through my notes and have these observations.

White make a mistake with 10.Nge2:

<E. 10.Nge2>

[-0.59] d=30 10...d4 11.Ne4 Nxe4 12.Bxe4 Bd5 13.Ng3 Bxe4 14.Nxe4 Qd7 <15.a3> h5 16.Ng3 hxg4 17.Qxg4 O–O–O 18.Kf1 Rh4 19.Qxd7 Kxd7 20.Nf5 Rh5 21.Ng3 Rhh8 22.d3 Ke6 23.Kg2 f5 24.Rae1 Rh4 25.Rd1 Rdh8

(note that 15.a3 was seen as the down-the-road response to 14...Qd7)

White could have played the much-better 10.d4:

<A. 10.d4 exd4>

[-0.25] d=30 10.d4 exd4 11.exd4 Qd6 12.Nge2 O–O–O 13.Qd2 Nd7 14.O–O–O Nb6 15.Rdf1 h5 16.Bf3 hxg4 17.hxg4 Kb8 18.Kb1 Qd7 19.g5 Bg4 20.Bxg4 Qxg4 21.f4

[-0.23] d=30 10.d4 exd4 11.exd4 Qd6 12.Nge2 0-0-0 13.Qd2 Nd7 14.0-0-0 Nb6 15.Rdf1 f5 16.gxf5 Bxf5 17.Nd1 Kb8 18.Ne3 Bh7 19.h4 Rhf8 20.Kb1 Rde8 21.f4 Bf6 22.Ng3

MarkThornton asked me if 15.Qf3 was in fact the way to respond to 14...Qd7:

MarkThornton: <RV> for what it is worth, the iPad version of stockfish insists that 15.Qf3 is the best reply to 14.....Qd7. What does Rybka think?

<MarkThornton>Rybka4.1 does not think 15.Qf3 is [in] the top 7 responses to 14...Qd7, initially.

Within 2 days of white playing 10.Nge2, I was posting this analysis:

<A3. 10...d4 11. Ne4 Nxe4 12. Bxe4 Bd5 13. Ng3 Bxe4 14. Nxe4 Qd7 15. Qf3 Nb4 16. 0-0-0 Nxa2+ 17. Kb1 Nb4 >

[-0.89] d=23 18.exd4 exd4 19.Ng3 Qc6 20.Qxc6+ Nxc6 21.Nf5 Bf6 22.Rhe1+ Kd7 23.Re4 Rae8 24.d3 Kc8 25.Rf4 Re2 26.Ng3 Re7 27.Rf5 Bh4 28.Ne4

[-0.94] d=23 18.h4 c5 19.Rde1 a5 20.exd4 cxd4 21.Ng3 O–O 22.Nf5 a4 23.Rxe5 Bd6

So, in conclusion, GMSKW must have had a very shallow search process. Either that, or ours was quite advanced.

Jan-27-14  RandomVisitor: <15...Nb4 continued>

Even after a long forced sequence, white could choose between, among others, 15.Qf3

<G1. 15.Qf3 Nb4 16.0-0-0 Nxa2+ 17.Kb1 Nb4>

[-0.73] d=33 18.Qf5 d3 19.c4<*> Qxf5 20.gxf5 f6 21.Ba3 a5 22.Kb2 Kf7 23.Rdf1 Rhg8 24.f4 exf4 25.Rxf4 b6 26.Rg1 Rae8 27.Rfg4 h5 28.Rh4 Rh8 29.Rf4 Ra8 30.Rh4 Rag8 31.Rd1

and 15.Ng3

<B. 15.Ng3>

[-0.64] d=33 15.Ng3 0-0-0 16.exd4 Nxd4 17.Bxd4 Qxd4 18.c3 Qd5 19.Qe2 Qa5 20.Qc4 Rd7 21.Ne4 Rf8 22.a4 g6 23.Rg1 Kb8 24.b4 Qd5 25.Qxd5 Rxd5 26.Rg3 f5 27.gxf5 gxf5 28.Rg7 Bxb4 29.cxb4 fxe4 30.Rh7

Neither of which looked appealing. Flash back to 10.d4 scoring -0.23 or -0.25. Which move would you choose now, 10.Nge2 or 10.d4?

<I think the word you want is "ambushed."

While watching this game played I thought that Aronian selection for reaching a draw was excellent. He had the game under control but goofed in a winning position. But he did allow black to equalize, but the challenge was not taken up by black who pushed for a win. After that had Aronian needed the point he would have taken it more serious and gotten the full point. Blacks approach was to win at all cost and thus played very risky from the start knowing Aronian was playing for a draw which was quite noticeable after a couple of moves already. In defense of blacks risky strategy which turned out to be unsound but very complicated over the board to solve. Aronian’s Queen Deployment to get counter play was quite interesting to watch while he faced a fierce King side attack. But his assessment was correct, he only needed to regroup his knights to hold off the attack on f3 to win.

Jan-27-14  Tiggler: <RV>:<Neither of which looked appealing. Flash back to 10.d4 scoring -0.23 or -0.25. Which move would you choose now, 10.Nge2 or 10.d4?>

What about 10.Nce2? This knight goes to g3 and then N1e2 can be played. I think this move must be better than 10.Nge2, though perhaps not better than 10.d4

At the time I agreed with <DomDaniel> that 10.d4 was unlikely, being unthematic for the opening.

Jan-27-14  RandomVisitor: I made this posting on the chessgames forum:

I hate to say this, but "Kim Pawn Ill" is really a poor choice for a nickname for a game that we really worked hard at. It pokes fun at someone and is in poor taste.

"Ginger Snapped" is probably the best choice and avoids controversy. You guys just made a wrong call on that one.

Yes because being politically correct, unimaginative and boring is better than being funny.

Jan-28-14  Boomie: -

BTW - The "Ginger Snapped" pun comes from AgentRgent here S Williams vs The World, 2013.

Jan-28-14  Boomie: <ajile>

I agree that "Kim Pawn Ill is creative but I don't think it is funny. Nothing about North Korea is funny. Political correctness has nothing to do with it as far as I can see.

<I wonder how much time White had to burn trying to figure out how to answer 4..h6.>

I think he expected it but did not play d4 to challenge the center as RV pointed out. I guess his style or attitude to always look for flashy type of games just did not allow him to play for a draw that early in the opening. Anyway it was fun for us. And I think he learned his lesson not to give the world team a pawn for almost no compensation.

If anyone deserves to be made fun of it's that guy and his oppressive regime. I guess you probably didn't like the genius puppet movie Team America World Police either.

Here's an epic clip for those here that need and appreciate funny.
