Jan-17-14  Ceri: <zsoydd: Dear Ceri,
my peak rating 'there' was 3169. At that time I was a beginner of 2400 ICCF ELO at most. Best regards
zsoyd>

Sorry, I must have missed your peak rating. However, I bet that you play at a higher level than 2400 now. Maybe we should subtract more than 600 from LPC ratings, then.

Of course, those ratings were achieved without computer assistance, so if we add some bonus from using programmes, then we get back to higher levels.

Cheers,

Ceri

Jan-17-14  parmetd: zsoydd and Ceri what are your iccf accounts?
Jan-17-14  chesssalamander: <DcGentle>So, he swings one of his rooks back to the 3rd rank?
Jan-17-14  DcGentle: <chesssalamander>: Yes, he will... <33... Rd6 34. Rf3 =>
Jan-17-14  DcGentle: I bet we'll see the end tomorrow night.

BTW, I am writing a summary already, this will consist out of the lines not played, because the game itself... I dunno. I only know that there is no comparison to the previous game against GM Akobian. There you could learn something.

What did I learn here? Well, there basically was one good move by the World, ok, let's say a good one and a very good one. The very good one was <14... Qd7>, winning a pawn. And this material gain was possible, because Black could trade the initiative into a pawn. This was instructive.

The good one.. I let you guess about this. ;-)

Maybe someone else will write a summary about the game itself?

Jan-17-14  cormier: summary : jolly game
Jan-17-14  galdur: RE: FEN. When I want to check the position with an engine I simply copy the move list and paste it into winboard where I have Stockfish and Houdini. Fast forward to last move, very simple.
Jan-17-14  chesssalamander: <DcGentle> So, the thinking is that after 33....Be3, if 34. dxe3, we push with 34....d2? (The ? is for the question, not the move.) Then, to stop the pawn, he has to swing a rook back to the 1st rank, and we could push again, promote the pawn, he'll have to take it, I think, and we get his rook. That's a rook for a bishop and a pawn. I dunno, I kinda want the pawn. (And, if not 34. dxe3, we win the pawn on d2?)

AylerKupp: <<thegoodanarchist> This surely is the most lopsided vote in the history of this team!>

Actually, no. There are currently (15:30 EST) 222 votes for 33...Be3 out of 231 votes total for a winning vote % of 96.1%. For comparison, these are the highest winning vote %'s for any one move for the 8 previous Challenge Games, in descending order:

The World vs G Timmerman, 2007 98.8%

Y Shulman vs The World, 2007 98.5%

The World vs N Pogonina, 2010 97.9%

A Nickel vs The World, 2008 95.8%

Akobian vs The World, 2011 95.7%

The World vs Akobian, 2012 94.4%

M Umansky vs The World, 2009 94.3%

The World vs A Nickel, 2006 93.5%

So the highest winning move % for this game is in the upper 1/2. But high winning move %'s are not that unusual, and they typically happen because the game is in the opening and there is a standard book reply to our opponent's move or if there is either a forced or a highly desirable capture during the game.

AylerKupp: <chesssalamander> As a comparison of how some engines evaluate 33.dxe3 vs. 33.Rf1 (the highest evaluated non-33.dxe3 that these engines assessed), see the analyses I posted on p.535. After 33.dxe3 d2 34.Rg1 (or 34.Rf1) 34...d1=Q 35.Rxd1 Rxd1 we get the following position:

click for larger view

Not only are we the exchange ahead but our other rook is finally freed from the defense of the Pg7 and can join the "fun" along the now open d-file and half-open e-file. He could make things a little interesting with 36.e5 but this does not seem to get him anywhere. And don't fret, we still have 6 more pawns.

Jan-17-14  DcGentle: <chesssalamander>: Well, yes, something like this, but you needn't think any further but until <33... Be3> This is enough for him to resign, believe me. ____________________________________

I'll stay up tomorrow night, because I am curious what will happen. If there is no move, then the likeliness is high that he resigned.

By the way, question to <chessgames.com>, can we arrange a date with <GingerGM> for the team to do a post mortem online? I'd suggest a weekend, maybe Sunday noon + 2 hours server time?

Would be great, I guess. But we should wait until summaries are finished. :-)

Jan-17-14  benjinathan: <DcGentle> I thimk the players in that part of the world should go have a beer with him.
Jan-17-14  DcGentle: Ok, I posed the question to <CeeGee> on their forum. We'll see.
Jan-17-14  DcGentle: <benjinathan>: Well, for sure, would be nice, but I cannot just travel to England for a beer, even if it's only an hour flight from here. ;-)

Or two!

You are interpreting my "that part of the world" a little more broadly than I intended;0

Come on, <Dc>, it works the other way round in Oktober!

Jan-17-14  DcGentle: Well, I am sure he will meet <condition>, his pal, but otherwise.. I dunno.

Would be better, if we had an online talk. Of course he can always write something on the game pages, after the game has ended, but this is not the same, if you know, what I mean.

Jan-17-14  DcGentle: <mistermac>: Munich also is rather far from here, you know, Germany is not only Bavaria :-)

Jan-17-14  DcGentle: <mistermac> Really, then it would be too sarcastic.
