 | | Benzol: Anybody know what Drazen is doing at the moment? |
|
Mar-18-04
 | | Benzol: <AdrianP> OK mate, here it is, my first and so far only encounter with a Grandmaster. Event : Simultaneous Display in the Howick Mall.
Site : Auckland, New Zealand.
Date : 1st February 2003.
Result : 1/2-1/2.
White : Sermek, Drazen.
Black : Morten, Paul.
ECO : D56
WhiteElo : 2577
BlackElo : ????
PlyCount : 82

After I made my 41st move I offered my opponent a draw. He thought about for a few seconds and then nodded his agreement.
During the game I was considering 27...f5 but was only looking at 28.Bxb7 Rb8. As my powerful opponent was polishing off his partners on the other boards so his appearance at mine became more frequent and I had no time to think. It was only later that it occurred to me that Black can play 28...Rc7. Still I was very pleased to draw this game.
Let me know your opinion. |

Mar-19-04 | | Lawrence: Benzol, nice. In case you haven't got a silicon friend here are a few points from Junior 8, for what they're worth. Your 18...Nh5 was one move too late, should have been 17...Nh5 giving you a nice edge. His 25.Bc2 was not strong, J8 does not know what he was thinking about. Finally, you're quite right, 27...f5 would have been very good. If White takes the pawn it's not 28...Rc7 but 28...Rb8. Congratulations on an excellent game. |

Mar-22-04 | | AdrianP: <Benzol> Great game... that K and pawn endgame did not look trivial - I would have been sweating a bit there! I can run the game through Fritz 8 if you like...? |
|
Mar-22-04
 | | Benzol: OK if you want to mate. <Lawrence> had Junior 8 go through it but it might be interesting to see what Fritz 8 says.
Drazen nodded in approval when I played 37...e4, he is a nice and generous man. Afterward he told me that he thought 37.g4 was going to give him a perhaps decisive edge but that my 37th was a fine rejoiner.
A few days later he gave a lecture at the Howick-Pakuranga Chess Club and featured the only game he lost in the New Zealand Championship against Leonard McLaren. See L McLaren vs D Sermek, 2003 |

 | | Benzol: Correction to my last post. It was the Auckland Open not the New Zealand Championship. |

Mar-29-04 | | AdrianP: <Benzol> Out of 587 games played by Drazen with white in my database, 584 started with 1. e4 and 1 started with 1. d4... looks like you caught him out of his opening preparation early on!! As Black, he sometimes plays 1. ...d5 in response to 1.d4 but pretty much invariably plays the Queen's Gambit Accepted. |
|
Mar-29-04 | | AdrianP: Here's a very nice win by Drazen

 | | Benzol: <AdrianP> Thanks for the analysis and other game references mate. Looks like it must have been my lucky day when he opened 1.d4! |
