Greetings, O Seeker After Knowledge! You have arrived in Dearborn, Michigan (whether you like it or not), and are reading words of wisdom from a player rated 2938--plus or minus 1000 points.

However, I've retired from serious play--not that I ever took playing chess all that seriously. You only have to look at my games to see that. These days I pursue the simple pleasures of finding games that are bizarre or just plain funny. I'd rather enjoy a game than analyze it.

For the record, my name is David Moody. This probably means nothing to you unless you're a longtime player from Michigan, though it's possible that if you attended any US Opens from 1975-1999 we might have crossed paths. Lucky you.

If you know me at all, you'll realize that most of my remarks are meant to be humorous. I do this deliberately, so that if my analysis stinks to High Heaven I can always say that I was just joking.

As you can undoubtedly tell from my sparkling wit, I'm a librarian in my spare time. Even worse, I'm a cataloger, which means I keep log books for cattle. Also, I'm not one of those extroverts who sit at the Reference Desk and help you with research. Instead, I spend all day staring at a computer screen updating and maintaining information in the library's catalog. The general public thinks Reference Librarians are dull. Reference Librarians think Catalogers are dull.

My greatest achievement in chess, other than tricking you into reading this, was probably mating with king, bishop and knight against king in a tournament game. I have to admit that this happened after an adjournment, and that I booked up like crazy before resuming. By the way, the fact I have had adjourned games shows you I've been around too long.

My funniest moment occurred when I finally got a chance to pull off a smothered mate in actual play. You know, 1.Nf7+ Kg8 2.Nh6+ Kh8 3.Qg8+ Rxg8 4.Nf7#. When I played the climactic queen check my opponent looked at the board in shocked disbelief and said, "But that's not mate! I can take the queen!"

Finally, I must confess that I once played a positional move, back around 1982. I'll try not to let that happen again.

Phony Benoni: Not a good recommendation for the DERLD. Out of 59 moves, White makes only three in Black's half of the board. And two of those conist of 3.Bb5 and 6.Bxc6.

Phony Benoni: Some more informztion. The game was published in <Chess Review>, March 1948, p. 23. Black's name is given as "M Kagan", and the location as "Massachusetts". There is no other game data, but I think we can now safely assume Black is <Milton Kagan>. Earlier in the ...

Fielding the position is part of a pitcher's job. If he can't do it the other team has every right to take advantage.

If a batter can hit line drives but has no power at all, is it unfair to play the outfielders in, closer to the infield?

  Penguincw: <Teams bunting on Sabathia>

In other news, Lester angry that runners take big leadoffs on him.

But the thing about leading off, they can't lead off on you if they don't reach base. Bunting, you can't stop that. You have to prepare for it.

<Joey Votto>

Well he's from Toronto, so I know (and hear) quite a lot about him. :)

Although I don't think playing for a team like CIN (0.427 winning percentage last 4 seasons) is helping with his publicity.

<Fielding>

Agree, every right to take advantage. I wouldn't do it in a 15-1 blowout, but that game yesterday was still a pretty close game.

And yes, I think fielders are allowed to do it. Fielders are encouraged to shift to any legal position they can to try to get a fielder out (which is why there are so many shifts).

Outfielders (especially RF) generally play in when a pitcher is hitting (unless you're McCutchen, and Pedro Strop is at the plate).

Penguincw: The Astros earlier today played in their first game at Minute Maid since Hurricane Harvey. This game was against NYM, and of course, who was starting for the Mets? None other than Matt Harvey.

However, HOU was able to weather the storm and win 12-8, to clinch their 81st win, which means a 3rd straight non-losing season. That would've been pretty unbelievable just a couple of years ago, when HOU nearly had 4 straight 100+ loss seasons.

Phony Benoni: All year long in Detroit, Verlander was plagued by poor run support. So he goes tot he Astros, they can't score for him -- and the Tigers put up 13. Go figure.

  saffuna: Shoulda traded him earlier.

And in Houston, the Astros didn't get a hit for him until the sixth.

Now. Besides the announcers and umps, did anyone watch all 19 innings of baseball between TOR and BOS?!

Penguincw: I still don't think LAD will blow that big division lead, but ARI is trying to make it interesting. LAD will sure have a tough 1st round matchup (assuming they get the first seed, and ARI beats whoever the 2nd WC is).

CLE is also quietly on a 13 game win streak. Could they take over HOU for the top seed in the AL? They've already taken over BOS, and are only 3 back of the Astros.

---

Poor Verlander with that run support. HOU got no-hit the first 6.1 IP (with 1 run scored on 3 BB and a SF), but they got the win.

---

TOR, ugh, that game was rough. I doubt the Jays are making the playoffs this year, but it's tough to see our 22 year old closer get roughed up. He already has 10 BSV this year (the record is 14), but at the same time, 35 SV and 61 appearances for a 64 win team is pretty impressive.

No, I went to sleep after the end of the 17th.

Phony Benoni: Still too many penalties for my taste, but if that's how they're going to win I'll live with it.

The Tigers' Ian Kinsler hit his 17th home run today. It was his first with a runner on base.

Sep-10-17

saffuna: That's extreme, but isn't Kinsler the leadoff hitter? I'd think he doesn't bat with men on all that often. In fact in his first at bat I bet he almost never hits with a man on.

Penguincw: And WSH is the first to clinch a division. I thought it would be LAD, but the NL East only has 1 team above 500.

The predictions I made a few weeks ago were pretty much most people's choices (at least the seedings) at the time. Now, they look a lot different: Phony Benoni chessforum (kibitz #22227)

Phony Benoni: Don't look know, but the Indians have won 18 games in a row, and can tie the AL record by beating the Tigers tonight. Unlikely but it could happen.

The record, as I recall is jointly held by the 1906 White Sox:

http://www.retrosheet.org/boxesetc/...

And the 1947 Yankees:

http://www.retrosheet.org/boxesetc/...

I find the Yankees' streak particularly impressive. Look at all those double headers!

The record of 26, of course, is held by the fourth-place 1916 Giants:

http://www.retrosheet.org/boxesetc/...

Second best, at 21, was the 1935 Cubs:

Penguincw: The record for longest winning streak, among an eventual WS champ that year, is CWS in 1906 and 1947 NYY, at 19 wins. CLE can tie the record if they win tonight, and win 11 (12?) in October.

Phony Benoni: Indians up 5-0 in the third. Tigers tried a rookie who hadn't given up a run in two long relieve appearances, but like everything lese this year it ain't working.
