Greetings, O Seeker After Knowledge! You have arrived in Dearborn, Michigan (whether you like it or not), and are reading words of wisdom from a player rated 2938--plus or minus 1000 points.

However, I've retired from serious play--not that I ever took playing chess all that seriously. You only have to look at my games to see that. These days I pursue the simple pleasures of finding games that are bizarre or just plain funny. I'd rather enjoy a game than analyze it.

For the record, my name is David Moody. This probably means nothing to you unless you're a longtime player from Michigan, though it's possible that if you attended any US Opens from 1975-1999 we might have crossed paths. Lucky you.

If you know me at all, you'll realize that most of my remarks are meant to be humorous. I do this deliberately, so that if my analysis stinks to High Heaven I can always say that I was just joking.

As you can undoubtedly tell from my sparkling wit, I'm a librarian in my spare time. Even worse, I'm a cataloger, which means I keep log books for cattle. Also, I'm not one of those extroverts who sit at the Reference Desk and help you with research. Instead, I spend all day staring at a computer screen updating and maintaining information in the library's catalog. The general public thinks Reference Librarians are dull. Reference Librarians think Catalogers are dull.

My greatest achievement in chess, other than tricking you into reading this, was probably mating with king, bishop and knight against king in a tournament game. I have to admit that this happened after an adjournment, and that I booked up like crazy before resuming. By the way, the fact I have had adjourned games shows you I've been around too long.

My funniest moment occurred when I finally got a chance to pull off a smothered mate in actual play. You know, 1.Nf7+ Kg8 2.Nh6+ Kh8 3.Qg8+ Rxg8 4.Nf7#. When I played the climactic queen check my opponent looked at the board in shocked disbelief and said, "But that's not mate! I can take the queen!"

Finally, I must confess that I once played a positional move, back around 1982. I'll try not to let that happen again.

Phony Benoni: Not a good recommendation for the DERLD. Out of 59 moves, White makes only three in Black's half of the board. And two of those conist of 3.Bb5 and 6.Bxc6.

Phony Benoni: <GrahamClayton> The source you cite, <Chess Review, May 1948, p. 24>, gives Black's name as <E Holland> "Chess Life" (June 5, 1948, p. 1) has a table of results giving <E L Holland>. That form also appears in USCF rating supplements for a player fro ...

Phony Benoni: Some more informztion. The game was published in <Chess Review>, March 1948, p. 23. Black's name is given as "M Kagan", and the location as "Massachusetts". There is no other game data, but I think we can now safely assume Black is <Milton Kagan>. Earlier in the ...

saffuna: He really smoked that one!

Following up on my earlier comment, the hardest-hit ball ever measured was a grounder by Giancarlo Stanton last year, 3 mph harder than the most powerful home run.

Penguincw: Darn, Jays blow 3-1 lead to lose in 15 innings. It was going to be a tough loss for 1 team, as both bullpens are beat up. In the last 4 days (Jul 15-18), the Jays' bullpen has thrown 25.1 innings, while the Red Sox bullpen has thrown 25 innings.

Penguincw: I just found out MadBum has returned from the DL. Surprised he's 0-3 this year (thought he got at least 1 win). Not much the Giants can still do this season (it is an odd year) but maybe we'll see some more home runs from him.

Meanwhile, Trout returned (also last week) but it looks like he can actually make a difference; despite missing him for nearly 2 months, the Angels are just 3 games out of a postseason spot.

Penguincw: And out all players, it was the pitcher who got a hit. Of course, Wainwright is a pretty solid hitter, as he is the active career hits leader, among pitchers.

Quite a pitching duel, 'til the 8th, where the Cubs struggle again. But the Cubs still get to Fly the W today.

WannaBe: Here's a fun link to play with, MLB teams and trades...

https://www.baseball-reference.com/...

In the above example, SFG/OAK last traded players in 2004.

NYM/NYY last "traded" in 2004, (I'm not counting the 2014 purchase of G. Germen.

LAD/SFG? 2007, before that, 1985, before that, 1968. (In 1956 Jackie Robinson was traded to New York Giants by Brooklyn, but Jackie refused to report to the Giants, so the trade was voided.)

Cubs and Cards? 2007, then 2002, and you have to go back to 1995 and 1980.

saffuna: That 1968 trade between SF and LA was a big deal, the first between the teams since they moved west.

Tom Haller for Ron Hunt, and didn't work out real well for the Giants. Hunt was a bit of a disappointment with the Giants, traded him for little after three years. Led the league in HBP every year.

I guess Haller was expendable because the Giants thought Dietz would be better. Dietz was the batter who famously stood still and let Drysdale's pitch hit him with the bases loaded to break DD's scoreless streak. Umpire made him stay and hit, corrrectly.

MissScarlett: <PB>, where's the crosstable for the Western championshp event?

Game Collection: Chicago Masters Tournament, 1926?

Jul-25-17
Premium Chessgames Member
  Phony Benoni: <MissScarlett> Here:

Game Collection: US Open 1926, Chicago = 27th Western Champ.

The 1926 Western Tournament was a "minor" event played at the same times as the Chicago Masters International. Perhaps I need to make that clearer in the narrative.

WannaBe: CIN and NYY had a triple play in the game, even more unusual is that a run scored.

saffuna: Question: is a runner who is forced to run on hit ball out if tagged while standing on his original base?

In that Reds triple play, the runner on second could have touched second easily but didn't and got hung up. If he'd just stood on second would he be out if tagged?

Of course if the fielder touched the base and forced the runner from first, then the guy on second could have stqyed safely on first.

Jul-25-17

Phony Benoni: I would think that being forced to vacate a base to make room for a following runner would means the original runner has no right to the base, which can therefore offer no protection even if he is standing onit.

It's different from the "Three Men on Third Base" situation. There no force play was involved, hence the original runner on third had the right to the base and the others were liable to be put out.

And, agreed, if the base is touched first by the fielder, that relieves the force and the original runner is safe if standing on the base. That's the Mantle play, to use the most famous example.

Jul-25-17
Premium Chessgames Member
saffuna: That's what I think, but I'm not sure. An amazing play anyway. A triple play where a run scored.
Jul-25-17
Premium Chessgames Member
saffuna: And Tyler Moore pulled off the Mickey Mantle play at first base, though this time the runner didn't get back to first.

I think Moore actually caught the ball while falling and the glove fell right on the base, so he didn't have the choice.

saffuna: Only have the play on "At Bat," can't find elsehwere.

But Moore was happy after making the play, so he could be called a merry Tyler Moore.
