WESLEY SO
(born Oct-09-1993, 31 years old) Philippines (federation/nationality United States of America)

[what is this?]

Born in Las Pinas, Philippines, Wesley So is a Filipino/American chess prodigy who attained the GM title at the age of 14 years, 1 month and 28 days. That made him the youngest GM in the world at that time. He was the Philippines' youngest ever International Master, youngest ever Grandmaster and the youngest ever National Champion.

Background

Wesley was only six when he learned the movement of chess pieces across a board. After memorizing them, chess set in hand, he explored the streets of his neighborhood daring people to play with him. At nine years old he began to compete in local, junior chess tournaments.

His first major tournament win was taking 1st place at the 2003 Philippine National Chess Championships for the under 10 age group.

So, was awarded his first GM norm at the Offene Internationale Bayerische Schach Meisterschaft, in Bad Wiessee, Germany. He acquired his second GM norm in the World Junior Championship (2007) in Yerevan, Armenia, and capped his year by earning his third GM norm at the 3rd Prospero Pichay Cup International Open in the Philippines. At the age of fourteen years, one month and twenty eight days, FIDE awarded him the title of Grandmaster, making him the ninth youngest chess grandmaster. He was then ranked strongest player in the world under sixteen years old.

In 2006 at the age of twelve years and ten months Wesley So became the youngest ever Filipino International Master and the youngest member of the national men's team to participate at the 37th Chess Olympiad in Turin, Italy.

In 2007, Wesley So went on to become the youngest National Junior Open Chess Champion and won the gold medal on board one, at the World Under16 Team Championships.

So won the title in the Dubai Open (2008), "The Sheikh Rashed Bin Hamdan Al Maktoum Cup", in the United Arab Emirates, and set a record as the youngest winner in the 10-year history of the Cup. Later that year, Wesley So was rated 2610 and was the youngest player in the history of the game to break the 2600 Elo barrier, surpassing the record previously held by Magnus Carlsen.

In 2012 he emigrated to the United States, and in 2014 he officially shifted his chess affiliation to the USA. In March 2016, So received the $42,000 Samford Fellowship. (1) Briefly in early 2017, So had his first and last interaction with a regular coach unknown player. (2)

As of April 2017, Wesley So is the USA's top player, as well as the #2 player in the world.

Rating and Ranking

Wesley So was the youngest player ever to cross the 2600 rating mark, 9 days before his 15th birthday, until 2013 when Chinese prodigy Wei Yi achieved the mark at the age of 14 years 5 months 23 days. In March 2013, So's rating crossed over to 2701 (the 92nd player to achieve 2700). In January 2017, So's rating was officially 2808. His April 2017 rating of 2822 made him the 2nd strongest player in the world, behind only Magnus Carlsen.

Apr-11-17  Amulet: Hurray GM Wes!

Thanks bro<joeyj>

Apr-11-17  MidwestChessFan: Once again GM Wesley So, congratulations for a great finish, reminiscent of the late GM Balinas conquering Odessa in 1976 as the only Filipino in a foreign land who has done so among very strong Soviet players. Truly a job well done. I'm just glad to have seen you in action during the second round and to have met ma'am Lotis in St. Louis. Priceless.
Apr-11-17  ChessHobby69: Philippine news were also publishing GM Wes victory in the US Chess Championship. Manila Bulletin, ABS-CBN news, Philstar, Sunstar, Rappler, Sports Interactive Network Philippines, Tempo, Inquirer.net, Manila Standard. Kalat na sa buong Pilipinas.
Apr-11-17  protossmaster12: Well, if these wins or draws are just pure luck then his opponents should deliver the perfect final blow. If not, then that unbeaten record stands still thus showing GM So's defensive prowess and maturity. Accept it that he is the next World Chess Champion! And I am with him in this endeavour coz it had been a long time since I dreamt of a Filipino (Torre, Cardoso, Antonio, Barcenilla and et al) to be on the top of the chess world. This is history in the making. :D

So pleasing to the ear........!

Indeed, everyone now puts Wesley right at the very top of the chessworld and in the same league as the current world champion.

Tsamba na kung tsamba, okay lang; kung lahat naman in the chessworld who matters consider you as "one of the best".

Wesley So Forever! Good day all!

Wes's chess success is making the chess world insanely jealous! He was a favorite to win the US Championship (2017) as one of the Big Three while riding his impressive undefeated streak.

1) W So vs Shabalov, 2017 QGD Slav with the adventurous 5. h3 & 7. g4, then Black opened lines with 15 ... c5!? and paid the price after a brutal onslaught with the novel attacking moves 19. Na4 & 21. Ba5 for a quick win.

2) S Shankland vs W So, 2017 Ruy Lopez Berlin Rio Gambit with early symmetry. White sacrificed a piece for perpetual check and a draw.

3) W So vs Caruana, 2017 Ruy Lopez Berlin Wall which traded down to an interesting RN vs RB ending where Wesley held the balance to draw.

4) W So vs Onischuk, 2017 KIA/double fianchetto by White who won two pieces for a Rook in the middlegame and coordinated them very well against Black's King to win, making Wesley the early leader at +2.

5) Y Zherebukh vs W So, 2017 French Tarrasch Chistyakov (4 ... Qxd5) evenly played to a draw against a relative newcomer to the US chess scene.

6) W So vs Akobian, 2017 Queen's Gambit Exchange into a sharp middlegame where White was busted (31 ... Qc2+) but somehow scraped a draw. This was the closest Wesley has come to losing in some time.

7) Robson vs W So, 2017 Another KIA/double fianchetto with chances for both sides. Black had promising play after a Pawn sacrifice for activity, yet White defended extremely well in severe time pressure and they drew.

8) W So vs Nakamura, 2017 QGD which became a Catalan and then a Stonewall where the center stayed closed until the end where they drew.

9) J Xiong vs W So, 2017 Wesley has quietly become an expert in the Slav with 6 ... dxc4 against the Catalan, but this one will go down as of the most brilliant wins in US Championship history with 21 ... Nxf2! as lightning out of a clear sky, then 28 ... Rd8!! wrapped it up.

10) W So vs Kamsky, 2017 OK, this Exchange Slav didn't work out so well, as White reached a tricky QN vs QN situation, then a Q vs Q ending down a Pawn and had to hold it very carefully, which he did.

11) D Naroditsky vs W So, 2017 The Short Draw Heard Round the World will be endlessly questioned, yet if Wesley overpressed as Black and lost, that also would have been endlessly questioned. In this last round, Akobian lost against Nakamura while Onischuk drew against Kamsky, making So and Onischuk tied for First at 7/11, leading to a rapid playoff the next day.

12) W So vs Onischuk, 2017 Interesting English by Wesley (1. c4 e6 2. Nc3 Nf6 3. e4) leading to a curious Ne3 situation, then White navigated the complications better and won in style. It's alright.

13) Onischuk vs W So, 2017 KIA where Black owned the center early, then an interesting BB vs NN middlegame leading to a QB vs QN endgame with White up two Pawns which probably would have been converted with a longer time control. Wesley found a nice perpetual check line to draw the game and win the title.

Congratulations to Wesley So for winning the 2017 US Championship!

tpstar: For today's site history lesson, Lawrence Day was the first name player to join the group and post regularly, yet he kept a very low profile at first so we didn't notice. Then Raymond Keene began visiting and interacting with us on a daily basis since June 2004, then Eric Schiller joined in March 2005. Keene's arrival here sparked a giant site-wide controversy in October 2014 over the "Ray Keene Crowd" where some members from the early days objected to off-topic discussion on his player page, violating the "spirit of the site" somehow, and the Administrators had to intervene. The sore spot was discussing literature with an author on his page - even chess books, and even things he wrote - so the new policy allowed name players to discuss any topic on their player page ("cookie recipes") and it became automatically on-topic, provided everyone still followed the Posting Guidelines. Some time later, name players gained the ability to Moderate their own page to cut down on sniping and showboating. All three of those figures have been subjected to vicious attacks over the years, largely by NN, with people using the anti-hero act just to see how they measured up against people who mattered in the chess world. How easy to throw stones at someone's house, instead of using those stones to build your own house.

After that prologue, remember <Wesley So> left his own page before due to sockpuppet shenanigans, while being sorely disappointed with negative interactions with his core fan base (at the time). From Page 4365 on 7/2/11:

<Filipinos.I'm not gonna visit this site anymore. It's only letting me down instead of up.>

Therefore Team Wesley may Moderate this page all they want, while <BatangLista> will banish folks from this page as they see fit. Going forward, if some character crashes here because they are desperate for attention, their posting frequency can be limited in real time if enough other visitors place them on ignore, based on the PITA index ("probability of initiating trolling activity"), then we must let <BatangLista> do their thing later. (To explain the joke, PITA is also an acronym for Pain In The Asterisk. :P) This message is not meant to promote lynch-mobbing of any particular person, except the Wesley So page will now be an even more appetizing target for troublemakers.

You may have been following the Historians versus Vandals battle over the last year, where the Bad People gather off-site to coordinate their damage against the Good People, trying to drive longtime posters away because they are insanely jealous and desperate to be relevant. Consider this entry on the site forum from 8/8/16 (addressed to me) which is not even close to what really happened:

"<<tpstar>: Dirty Old Man and Race Baiter. I predict a free pass, or a very light "slap on the wrist" for <tpstar> on this - the same free pass he got when he almost single-handedly blew up the entire website by race-baiting the Barangay. They were largely friendly folks, inviting non-Pilipinos (myself included) to join in their kibbutzing, no complaints (yet) about them from <GM So>, and then in comes <tpstar> with his "little crusade," as <acirce> put it at the time. <tpstar's> endless "English-only!" cries and race-baiting bore out <acirce's> warning - in spades. He used the often successful race-baiting technique of accusing his target of being racist, so as to anger them sufficiently that they responded in kind. That was a mistake.">

Wow, these precious Historians have no idea what went down here over the last eight years. Moreover, the one person in the world with the handle on this page happens to be a Vandal. How about that.

See how my writing and my presence makes certain people insanely jealous. Like I said before, if you don't like me or my posts, feel free to place me on ignore, but you will definitely miss out on some stuff.

Go Wesley! ;>D

Apr-12-17  gregory2188: Congratulations GM So!
Hope you could visit Bay Area again.
Love listening to your lectures esp the Ruy Lopez. Good luck on your next tourney!

OhioChessFan: It is my observation that people who I determine are at odds with the truth in one place are at odds with the truth everywhere. The consistency is stunning. No matter who appeals to them to support their untruth, they do so. No matter what page they kibitz on, they are at odds with the truth. One of the untruthers appealed to a link on a page that I determined had 25 posts and none of them speaking truth! And that among 6 different posters. I won't name that page, but let's call it the player page for user: trebgorf.

In any event, this page has become much better and not worse. Wesley's bar has been set high. I admit to a bit of disappointment in his performance, but he did after all win the US Championship with some WCC contenders behind him. Go Wesley!

HeMateMe: <It is my observation that people who I determine are at odds with the truth in one place are at odds with the truth everywhere.>

So, if gang bangers in Cleveland buy machine guns in the deep south [they couldn't legally buy them in Ohio] and shoot up a hip hop night club in Ohio because someone 'got dissed,' [this happened a month ago] the USA would <not> be a safer place if unlimited gun sales in the deep south were slightly curtailed with responsible gun control laws?

If a person cannot draw such a simple conclusion, if they "are at odds with the truth in one place" then I would agree that they have a problem seeing clearly in many places. This casts doubt on such a person being able to function 100% of the time as a rational adult.

Apr-12-17  iking: that's understandable <OCF> .. even WEsley said his performance is not that very good .... but good enough to win the tournament.
