 | | Benzol: One of the positions Stuart Conquest demonstrated last night at the HPCC. click for larger viewFrom the good old days when we had adjournments. Stuart playing white is to seal his move. His first question to those gathered around was "Who is better here?" I myself favoured white but after some discussion it was generally agreed that overall black's chances were better. So if you are white "What do you play and how do you proceed to try and draw?" Stuart sealed his move and then went off to have dinner and generally relax whilst his opponent choose to forgo dinner and spent the two hours before the resumption on the analysis of this position. A number of moves and ideas were proposed by our group of players but most of us missed the idea that transpired over the board. To his credit only Edward Tanoi of Papatoetoe Chess Club found Stuart's amusing and quite elegant solution. 1.♗xe8+ ♔xe8
2.♕b5+ ♖xb5 stalemate!
Stuart's poor opponent had looked at just about everything except this for two hours and his faced apparently dropped when Stuart uncorked 2.♕b5+.
Stuart himself was quite amused. |

Mar-01-11 | | newzild: Mr. Conquest once beat me in a simul (Hamilton, New Zealand, about 11 years ago). I remember it well, because it's the only time I've ever played a grandmaster. Happy birthday, Mr. Conquest. |

Mar-01-12 | | wordfunph: on GM Stuart Conquest..
<2002 Bled Chess Olympiad:
GM Stuart Conquest had been held up literally in England for some days. On his way to the Olympiad, he was robbed of his computer, baggage, and his passport at London's Victoria Station and had been unable to fly with the rest of the team. His belated appearance galvanized his team and helped England to brush Chile aside 4-0.> happy birthday GM Conquest! |

Aug-21-20 | | technical draw: A phony name if I ever heard one. Wasn't there a cartoon called Johnny Conquest? |
|
Jan-05-21 | | lentil: It was "Johnny Quest". |
|
Jan-05-21 | | Z4all: To be accurate, "Jonny Quest" (~1964). A fantastic kid's cartoon, with one of the best kick-ass music themes ever (by Hoyt Curtin): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7gN...
Alex Toth did the character designs, so you know it's gotta be good (plus it's one of Joseph Barbera's favorites too). https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XkD... (Barbera)
