GrahamClayton: Naylor featured in one of the more unusual forfeits during the 2013 European Club Cup in Greece. He forgot to reset his watch to local time, and was relaxing in a bath when he should have been ready to play Viktor Bologan.
Aug-20-20  cruiseyleemorph: One of the most gifted and talented players on the English chess circuit. One of if not the best non titled player in England. But most of all a lovely fun guy though of fondly by many. A recent UK chess Patzers player who played in the 2020 world chess league and finished 2nd from almost 100 teams. He finished on 12/12. Total legend. John died last week shortly after this feat. Rip mate. Lee. Your captain.

OhioChessFan: <cruisey> if you know the date of death, I'll add that to his bio. And anything else you think would be appropriate, tournament wins, etc.
Aug-20-20  Nosnibor: <OhioChessFan> At the present time no one knows his exact date of death except it was some time after 11th August. He was found dead in his flat in Leicester just a few days ago. He had started playing in Leicester for the Syston Chess Club from the 2017/18 season. He was a very amiable person and I recall playing him in the last round of a British Championship Qualifying Tournament held in Birmingham 1995. After I had beaten him he shook my hand ,said good game and congratulated me on qualifying. He also offered to send some chess opening knowledge online. He was a team mate of mine at the Syston Chess Club and he will be very much missed. R.I.P. John.
Aug-20-20  Nosnibor: In 1990 John Naylor took the title of Midlands under 21 Champion at the age of 17 at the congress held in Derby, March 1990
Aug-20-20  Nosnibor: In the tournament book it states that he was 17 but of course he would have been 18 years of age following his birthday the previous month.
Aug-21-20  Paint My Dragon: John had some good results among titled opposition over the years: for example,

6.5/10 at the <15th Lloyds Bank Masters>, London 1991 (Alexei Shirov won with 8/10) - the same score as GMs Julian Hodgson, Igor Naumkin, Thomas Ernst, and future GMs Ziaur Rahman, Nigel Davies, John Emms and James Howell.

5.5/11 at the <3rd Hampstead Festival> (IM event, Simon Knott won with 8.5/11), London 1998 - finishing ahead of IMs Robert Wade and Andrew Whiteley.

MissScarlett: Any idea of cause of death?
Aug-21-20  Paint My Dragon: Incidentally, the two <J Naylor-SK Williams> games from Hampstead 1998 look suspicious in the list above, but I think the explanation is that the first is from the 2nd Edition of the festival.

IIRC, editions 2 and 3 were played in March and August of that year.

Aug-21-20  Paint My Dragon: <MissScarlett: Any idea of cause of death?>

No, but Williams and Gormally are supposed to be streaming about him at 6pm today, i.e. now.

On Twitch I imagine.

  MissScarlett: OK, report back.
Aug-21-20  Nosnibor: <MissScarlett> Apparently John was found dead in his flat by the police following forced entry to his rooms. After August 11 nobody was able to contact him for a number of days because he was not responding to phone calls. It was apparent on entry that he had been deceased for quite a few days and an autopsy will have to be undertaken to establish the cause of death.

kingscrusher: I have only just heard this tragic news today

RIP John Naylor

I did a tribute video for him earlier today:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xEa...

My deepest condolences to his family

Sep-04-20  Nosnibor: John`s funeral will be held on Wednesday 23rd September at the English Martyrs Church, High Street, Hillmorton, Rugby from 2.30 onwards. It is thought that his date of death was sometime Wednesday 12th August. Due to the lockdown numbers will be severely limited at the funeral. Apparently the post mortem have still not ascertained the exact cause of death but hope to have a result sometime after the funeral.
Sep-06-20  happyjuggler0: It seems there will be some sort of tournament in his honor today at 7pm UK time (8pm CEST). Looks like some big names will be playing in it.
