Aug-19-16  pinoymaster77: Nag start na, opening stages
Aug-19-16  kamagong24: Bless you Janelle Mae Frayna!!!

Aug-19-16  HalfShot: Wow Frayna is fearless!! Queen exchanged for 3 minor pieces!!
Aug-19-16  paulegavesky: 3 pieces for a queen! nice choice... she's fearless...heart of a champion! Go Janelle go..go..go!
Aug-19-16  MCDreamz: Sue Polgar is watching.
Aug-19-16  Virgil A: WIM will wipe out the competition. Waking tsamba dito.
Aug-19-16  pinoymaster77: Interesting, IM Rodriguez Rueda went for WIM Frayna's queen for a rook and 2 pieces.

Janelle's solo lead in Chessbase and Chess Daily News, she has really put PHI / NCFP in the world chess news again

Aug-19-16  gokusano: Recruiter ng minnetonka on the loose! Ewan ko bakit me mga ganyang tao, kumita lang kahit me masaktan.
Aug-19-16  MCDreamz: Masakit ba ma-ban? lol

Somebody put a picture of Janelle please, preferably a glam pic.

If there's a picture of her together with her idol Wesley So then that would be even better.

Aug-19-16  Virgil A: Uphill climb for Frayba on round 11. Looks like 2 other players will join her at the top.
Aug-19-16  epistle: You can't reach the top for the first time by your lonesome.

Everyone needs a Tenzing Norgay to reach the summit of success.

Aug-19-16  ambongtumbong: waking tsamba dito.. hayan nausog tuloy. good luck Janelle on your remainining games.
Aug-19-16  Pru: Tied for lead si Janelle, puwede pa yan. White bukas, try to go for the win.
Aug-19-16  Nina Myers: Down goes Fraany, with two rounds left
Aug-19-16  gokusano: Hold your nerve
You are still in the lead and winning the top plum is just two rounds away. You can do it.
Aug-19-16  cro777: Since losing games is inevitable, learning from losses is important.

Rodriguez Rueda – Frayna

Semi Slav: Anti-Meran. The novelty 13.Nb5 was refuted by 13…cxb5 (trading the queen for a rook and two minor pieces).

1.d4 d5 2.c4 c6 3.Nf3 Nf6 4.e3 e6 5.Bd3 Nbd7 6.0–0 Bd6 7.Nc3 0–0 8.e4 dxc4 9.Bxc4 e5 10.Bg5 h6 11.Bh4 Qc7 12.Rc1 exd4

The main move here is 13.Qxd4. Rodriguez played carelessly 13.Nb5 (she probably thought that Black cannot take the night because of the pin). Frayna took the challenge and got a clearly better position. Where she lost her advantage?

13. Nb5? cxb5! 14. Bxf7+ Rxf7 15. Rxc7 Bxc7 16. Nxd4 Nxe4 17. f3

Here Frayna chose the wrong retreat (17…Ng5?) and lost her advantage.

With a simple 17…Nd6! Frayna could have preserved a clearly better position, e.g.

17... Nd6! 18. Ne6 Ne8 19. Re1 (19. Nxc7 Nxc7 20. Bg3 Nf8) Bb6+ 20. Bf2 Bxf2+ 21. Kxf2 Ndf6 22. Nd8 Rd7 23. Qb3+ Kh7 24. Rd1 Rxd1 25. Qxd1 Bf5 26. g4 Bg6 27. Nxb7 Rc8 with better chances for Black.

Aug-19-16  cro777: Another instructive moment arose in the position after 37.Rc7+

Frayna to move

The overriding principle in endgames of this type is activity of the pieces and their coordination. Activity is often more important than material. It is essential to move the king to the center.

In the diagram position Frayna, instead of 37…Kg6? (which was the decisive mistake), should have played 37…Ke6! and if 38.Rxg7 then 38…N6d7

click for larger view

White is still better but in a worse position if the defender manages to put up resistence then the pressure is on the player with the advantage to find ways to advance and often he/she falters in this.

Frayna should be praised for her fighting chess. She will learn from her mistakes.

Aug-19-16  pinoymaster77: Another nice post mortem by Master cro777, alright lang pala yung queen for 3 pieces.

Checking out the Rules in WJCC site for the tiebreaks :

4.Tie-breaks: If two are more players are tied, the following tiebreak’s will be used a) Results of direct encounters between the tied players ( applies only if all tied players have played each other), b) Buccholz Cut 1, c) Buccholz, d) The greater number of games played with black, e) The Greater number of wins.

Aug-19-16  pinoymaster77: Mr. Bobby Ang's article in Business World :

"Janelle has so far won 6 drew 4 and lost none, and is the surprise of the tournament. If she holds on to win the gold, this would be chess history, as no Filipina has ever placed in the top 20 in this event, let alone be the leader this late in the tournament.

This very prestigious tournament brings together the top girls’ players in the world and awards an automatic Woman Grandmaster title to its winner.

The 2015 UAAP Athlete of the Year awardee first served notice that Janelle was a special package by being the first female to qualify for the Finals of the 2014 Philippine National Chess Championship (Battle of the GMs) where she proved that this accomplishment was no fluke by defeating International Grandmasters Richard Bitoon and Rogelio Antonio Jr."

Akong bahala sayo.
