JANELLE MAE FRAYNA
(born May-19-1997, 27 years old) Philippines

[what is this?]

Women's GM(1) Frayna received this title in September of 2016. After 9 (of 13 total) rounds, she met (eventual tournament winner) Dinara Saduakassova at the World Junior Championship (Girls) (2016), holding at the top score group throughout until Paula Andrea Rodriguez Rueda delivered her her first loss. She finished with 8.5/13 points, enough for share of 4th-8th overall (or 5th when factoring in tie-breaks). Frayna played top board for the Philippines' 2016 women's Olympiad team(4).

Jun-24-14  pinoymaster77: There's some machismo also in Phil chess,I've heard even in Non-Masters circles that it was mentioned 'matalo ka na sa iba, huwag lang sa babae', or 'kung chess player ka, huwag na huwag ka papatalo sa babae'...

So, maybe this thinking has been prevalent in both sexes that is why before this 2014 BOGM no womens player had ever beaten a Male GM in a standard tournament.

So maybe GM Rich would bear the brunt of GM jokes in the years to come. From the moves Ive played and per sharings from chess friends eh GM Rich's bishop sac was dubious, maybe he thought it would 'rattle' WIM-Elect Janelle. Yung kay IM Asi naman looked like he was overconfident, while wala pa yung PGN nung game ni gmjoey.

Kaya sigurado naging lesson learned yan and usap-usapan among the male Masters eh do not UNDERESTIMATE the Women Masters. Kaya lang paano iyan, the dam has been broken and Im sure the likes of WIMs Camacho, Fronda and WNM Bernales has taken note na 'AH KAYA PALA NAMING TALUNIN'.

Actually WNM Bernales has been doing it in regularly beating male players, but the success has been mainly in rapid and blitz events. She won the Luneta rapid event last year.

Jun-24-14  resty: agree ako dyan . .
Jun-25-14  pinoymaster77: Was able to visit the PSC venue, halos tapos na games sa Mens Division except yung kila leader WIM Jem Garcia and WIM-Elect Janelle Frayna, nasa big board ang game nila...

Sa naabutan ko lamang na ng 2 pawns si Janelle, while Jem was playing on increments na lang, Frayna built up the pressure and naging 3 pawns up pa then her queen was able to wiggle its way to the enemy territory via the queenside to pressure the uncastled enemy king, eventually IM Jem capitulated.

Ang beneficiary nun eh si GM Panjol who won over IM Pimentel, while GM Torre drew with GM Banjo. IM Pau fell to gmjoey in a CK game.

New solo leader after 7 rds is GM JP with 5/7 while with 4.5pts are AFGM Torre, WIM-Elect Frayna and IM Garcia. At 4 pts is IM Paulo.

Within striking distance and creeping upwards with 3.5pts are GM Laylo (2nd straight win), GM Banjo and IM Dimaks. GMJoey has 3pts.

Spotted also after rd7 eh WIM-Elect Frayna had a media interview (may cameraman so it could be for TV, lookout for some sports news feature?)

Jun-25-14  joeyj: WoW !!!

Per my computations for a minimum of 9-rounds and also based on the ratings of her succeeding R8 & R9 opponents ... WIM Frayna with 4.5/7 had already qualified for a WGM norm requirement of 4.5/9 : 2400-2442. The ave rating of her 9 opponents for 9-rnds is 2406.55 or 2407.

Additionally, she only needs 0.5 in the next 2-rnds to score 5.0/9 : 2407-2449 for an IM norm.

Jun-25-14  pinoymaster77: Ive just read in this article that WIM-Elect Janelle Mae Frayna eh 'in the running pa for cum laude honors' :

http://sports.inquirer.net/157011/f...

Sana ma confirm yung kay Prof joeyj, tapusin muna etong final 4 games kung saan makakarating...

Single o double norm ba kung Natl championships?

Jun-25-14  geniokov: Hmmm,I´m becoming interested to this young talent! How about Bernadette Gallas? Where is she now?
Jun-25-14  kingknightflo: Kababayan ko to kaya all out support ako dito! Go for the norms WIM-Elect Janelle Mae Frayna!!!
Jun-25-14  geniokov: Wala bang mga pictures ang BOGM natin with this girl?
Jun-25-14  geniokov: Where she came from in the Philippines?
Jun-25-14  resty: woooowwwwooooowwweeeeeee!!!!

march on!!!

galeng-galeng!!! clap-clap!!!!

Jun-25-14  kingknightflo: Legazpi, Albay. Our province and city.
Jun-25-14  Bruce Graham: It seems she is marching on: http://www.rappler.com/sports/phili...
Jun-25-14  kardopov: <Spotted also after rd7 eh WIM-Elect Frayna had a media interview (may cameraman so it could be for TV, lookout for some sports news feature?)> Panalo Phil. chess nito pag nagtuloy tuloy ang ratsada. She'll become the talk of the town at magiging instant celebrity.
Jun-25-14  geniokov: How is the ruling in Women when they get a GM norm? Should it be 3x the same as the requirement in Men? How is she categorize by Fide according to groupings? Shall they consider her as Women´s Junior since she was still under 21yrs of age?
Jun-25-14  geniokov: She might be our own version as "Judith Polgar of the Philippines!"
Jun-25-14  pinoymaster77: Thanks to NCFP staff eh pati PGNs rounds 4 to 6 na input na in between rounds then later today pati round 7 meron na!

Would suggest our chessmates go over the game this am between WIM-Elect Frayna and IM Garcia.

Dun naman sa gmjoey vs IM Pau, eh Pau defended with the CK which is Joey's favorite naman.

If confirmed yung calculation ni joeyj na enough points na for WGM norm, then Lilet mentioned pag National Championships eh DOUBLE norm nga, then Janelle can clinch the required number of norms in the Tromso Olympiad (also a double norm event !)

Im gungho on our emerging Womens team bannered by WIMs Camacho, Frayna and Fronda, then will probably be joined by WNM Bernales and WIM Perena.

Speaking of WNM Christy Bernales, she had a 'wild' attacking game vs Gladys Romero just this rd8 tonight, nasa big board and as described by Coach Erwin Carag eh ala Tal na atake na, by intuition or speculative... replay the PGN once available.

Jun-25-14  pinoymaster77: Genio,

WIM Bernadette Galas is now varsity player of DLSU, now on her sophomore year, she just played in the ASEAN Age Group for PHI sa Girls U18 where she got a couple of individual golds in standard and rapid, plus some team golds.

Di na nakalaro sa NCC Finals kasi ka excuse lang from school for over a week playing in Macau for PHI.

She's now leading the Women's Division, and posed to join the Women's Olympiad team!

Jun-25-14  geniokov: Thanks for the info bro.<PM77> Bilib ako sa pagiging updated mo sa Philippine Chess.Hindi lang sa magaling kang mag-chess bro but your know how about sa Pinoychess eh walang pwedeng pumantay.
Jun-25-14  geniokov: To think of she beat GM Joey is something you can trasure in your life.
Jun-25-14  geniokov: Speaking of GM Joey,Alam mo ba na may chessbook akong nabili at ang title eh "The Perfect Pirc-Modern" by Viktor Moskalenko.GM Joey was featured in one of this page at may picture pa niya!He is the inventor of the idea of Philippine Attack in Pirc Defence!
Jun-25-14  pinoymaster77: Genio,

NCFP on RIGHT TRACK on seeding WIMs Camacho, Frayna, Fronda as core of our 2014 Womens team. All 3 have their chess prowess on the rise.

Pleasantly surprised with the seeding of WIM Camacho, she deserves it being the highest rated Pinay Master. But she was in the US for UTD studies, and not exactly 'in' with NCFP brass.

WNM Bernales naman was our top junior womens campaigner during the time of the late Willy Abalos, and actually was at odds or 'outside the kulambo' with current NCFP brass. Mabuti her camp was convinced to rejoin the fray in NCFP events, and some of our known chess friends are helping in her training and logistics.
