Jun-19-13  pinoymaster77: Frayna anchor FEU chess romp
by Marlon Bernardino

Woman International Master (WIM) elect Janelle Mae Frayna anchoring the Far Eastern University (FEU) triumphant finish in the conclusion of Spartan Mining Philippine Inter-Collegiate Chess Team Championship at the Library and Media Room of Ninoy Aquino Stadium inside Rizal Memorial Sports Complex (RMSC) in Manila on Wednesday.

Backed up by FEU team owner Anton Montinola and Athletic Director Mark Oliver Molina, the Tamaraws amassed 24 points to grab the first prize worth P20,000 plus trophy, plus gold medals.

The straight nine Round Swiss-System tournament organized by the National Chess Federation of the Philippines (NCFP) headed by it's chairman/president Prospero "Butch" Pichay Jr. and Secretary-General 7th district Cavite Rep. Abraham "Bambol" Tolentino Jr., hosted by President and CEO of Spartan Mining and Development Corporation and NCFP Director for Finance Luis G. Ramos in close cooperation with the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) and Philippine Olympic Committee (POC).

Frayna, who hails from Legaspi City topped the individual women's event with unbeaten 8.0 points record on account of seven wins and two draws in nine outings to enroute P5,000 plus trophy. Enrica Villa chipped in 6.0 points, followed by Nikki Erica Yngayo and Gladys Hazel Romero, both tallied 5.0 points apiece.

"Nagpapasalamat po kami kina Sir Anton Montinola (FEU team owner) at Sir Mark Oliver Molina (Athletic Director) sa full support nila sa FEU chess team,"said Frayna, who is set to play in the upcoming Asian Indoor and Martial Arts Games (AIMAG) from June 29 to July 6 in Incheon, Korea.

FEU enhance its reputation as a breeding ground of future chess masters who already produced three (3) grandmasters (Bong Villamayor, Nelson Mariano and Jayson Gonzales), and International Master (Yves Ranola) who also play for the Philippine Team for the World Chess Olympiad, Asian Games, Southeast Asian Games and Asian Indoor Games and other International chess competition.

“The success of FEU players in chess competitions only shows that a solid program can take you to the top,” said National Chess Federation of the Philippines (NCFP) Chairman/President Prospero “Butch” Pichay, Jr. “That’s what we’re trying to establish, a solid program that aims to develop our young players.”

The University of the Philippines coaches by Fide Master/Fide trainer Leonardo Carlos and Woman International Master Catherine Perena, spearheaded by Woman National Master Christy Lamiel Bernales, Joanna Vanessa Barbosa, Roxanne Atayde, Arvie Lozano and Ruth Aubrey de Guzman collected 21.5 points to grab the second prize of P15,000 plus trophy, plus silver medals, Adamson University team of coach Christopher Rodriguez led by Eunice Joy Whigan, Mariel Batulan, Crissa Canada, Jon Ira Dela Cruz and Eloisa Sta. Rita piled up 21.0 points to settle for the third place honor worth P8,000, plus trophy, plus bronze medals while the National University of coach Jose "Jojo" Aquino Jr. with Jean Karen Enriquez, Lucelle Bermundo, Queenie Lyn Reyes, Quinna Louise Soler and Hiezel Coraje at the helm accumulated 19.5 points for fourth place finish and pocketed P7,000 cash purse .

No less than NCFP Executive Director GM Jayson Gonzales, Asia’s First International Master Rodolfo Tan Cardoso and International Arbiter Gene Poliarco have presided in giving the awards to the winners during the closing rites.-Marlon Bernardino-

Jun-20-13  shadowleaf04: <FEU enhance its reputation as a breeding ground of future chess masters who already produced three (3) grandmasters (Bong Villamayor, Nelson Mariano and Jayson Gonzales), and International Master (Yves Ranola) who also play for the Philippine Team for the World Chess Olympiad, Asian Games, Southeast Asian Games and Asian Indoor Games and other International chess competition.>

As far as I know, GM Bong Villamayor graduated from UST, while GM Nelson Mariano graduated from UE. This is for their college education.

I believe there is a need to check the facts for this article.

Jun-20-13  epistle: I didn't also know that there is already a place in the Phils where they breed strong chessplayers.
Jul-03-13  joeyj: Janelle Mae Frayna scored 5.5/9 with a Rating performance (Rp) of 2285 in the 2013 ‘Manny Pacquiao Cup’ Asian Continental Chess Championship - Women (18-26 may 2013) to complete her 3 WIM norms requirement.

She earned her initial WIM norm at the 2012 World Chess Olympiad – Women in Istanbul after scoring 6.0 pts in 9-rounds of play. A WIM norm in the Olympiad counts as 20 games or 2-WIM norms.

To achieve the WIM title all she need is to reach a Live Rating of 2200.

Her July 2013 FIDE Rating is 2095.

At the 4th Asian Indoor & Martial Arts Games 2013 – Women Classical (30 June – 3 July 2013) she finished 7th place overall scoring 4.5/7 and had gained +25.7 points to her ‘standard’ FIDE Live Rating that now stands at 2120.7.

Jul-03-13  pinoymaster77: Ok joeyj, up to 2200 pala pag WIM title, she is slowly inching her way up, patuloy lang sa intl tourneys.

It would help if our Natl events na standard events eh FIDE rated ano?

Anyway, I think historically the BOGM and WBOGM were FIDE rated, I remember specifically for GM Wes and our GMs, their live ratings had entries for previous BOGM editions...

The WBOGM may yet be Frayna's next FIDE rated event to continue her ELO campaign...

Jul-03-13  joeyj: ^^^ BOGMs are PHI National Championships (for Men/Open & Women) and are FIDE rated events and norms are also at stake.
Jun-23-14  joeyj: Ave rating of 11 opponents : 2414.36

GM Norm:
8½ /11 2389-2424

IM norm:
6 /11 2414-2449

WGM norm:
5½ /11 2400-2435

But of course it's for 11 rounds.

What about 9 & 10 rounds (we will re-compute later) !!!

Jun-23-14  resty: sana maging spectacular ang performance ng kaisa-isang dalaga sa labanang ito!!!! gudlak!!!!
Jun-23-14  pinoymaster77: Ayos Prof joeyj, well within reach ah, good pace at 3/4 (9pts). I just hope I didn't ask too early on that WGM norm ahehe.

Now, who will stop the Lady's 'rampage', nakasalang naman now si GM Banjo ah for their round 5 encounter, then bukas its GM Dar's turn to stem the tide...

Jun-23-14  pinoymaster77: The write-up in Rappler.com by chessmate Iggy Dee, after round 3 pa lang eto taking note of the consecutive wins vs GM Rich (first for a Phil Woman Master!) and IM Pimentel. Tapos may earth shaking win pa this am in rd4 vs GM Joey.

Jun-23-14  SugarDom: Making waves at the BOGM sibaking the men.

OhioChessFan: MANILA, Philippines – Riding high off her newly acquired status as Woman International Master, Janelle Mae Frayna continued to make waves in the Battle of Grandmasters-National Chess Championships on Monday, June 23.

Frayna claimed her biggest upset yet in the event, which serves as tryouts for the national team to the World Chess Olympiad in Tromso, Norway in August, by outplaying veteran Grandmaster Rogelio Antonio Jr. at the Philippine Sports Commission dining hall inside the Rizal Memorial Sports Complex.

With a small gallery watching, the 19-year-old Far Eastern University psychology junior from Legazpi City, playing white, turned her opponent’s blunder into victory after 47 moves of an Owen’s Defense.

Jun-23-14  Nonnus: It is high time a photo of hers is installed here. I'm sure it's her looks which is distracting the men players. Either she's too pretty or too ugly.
Jun-23-14  john barleycorn: <Nonnus> here

Nothing to get excited about just by the look.

perfidious: If the appearance of a woman is sufficient to distract a player, I suggest he get disciplined and focus on why he is sitting at the board.
Jun-23-14  resty: Wow! 2553 TPR after five rounds!! Keep it up!!!
Jun-23-14  pinoymaster77: The Malaya article :

http://www.malaya.com.ph/business-n...

In round 5 last night, per chess friend's text messages GM Banjo had the upperhand pero may mali daw na continuations kaya tumagilid. Banjo salvaged the draw via a rook sac on g7 then got a perpetual check. Will have to wait for the PGNs for rounds 4 and 5 to be posted in chess-results.com to checkout WIM Frayna's 2 games yesterday!

Jun-23-14  pinoymaster77: 3.5/5 na and fully in pace pa, GM Dar's turn naman in round 6, battles begin 3pm!
Jun-24-14  pinoymaster77: GM Dar stopped the run with a win in rd6 over WIM Frayna
Jun-24-14  torrefan: It's a well-known fact that she has a crush on Laylo. Her psychological tricks didn't work on him.
Jun-24-14  pinoymaster77: Sa Womens Division, UP Coach WIM Perena and UP top board WNM Bernales are tied for the lead with 4.5 / 6, both already had their BYE rounds.

I got a text from chess coach-friend na 4 players na land daw sa Womens team? Got curious and made a search, and confirmed that well in the case of the 2012 Olympiad in Istanbul, there were still 5 players. Has there been a change ?
