IGORS RAUSIS
(born Apr-07-1961, died Mar-28-2024, 62 years old) Latvia (federation/nationality Czech Republic)

[what is this?]

Ex-Grandmaster and FIDE Trainer Rausis played for the Czech Chess Federation. He was Latvian Champion in 1995. In his fifties, Rausis experienced an increase of over 200 points in his rating, putting him among the top 100 players in the world and taking his rating to almost 2700. In July 2019, he was accused of cheating by using a mobile phone in the bathroom during a game. Rausis subsequently pled guilty and in December 2019, FIDE revoked his GM title and banned him from OTB play or other involvement in official competition for six years until July 2025. Rausis was previously married to Olita V Rause, with whom he had two children.

Jul-16-19  fabelhaft: Rausis could easily have done a Bindrich, who was caught with a phone in the same way as Rausis, but just denied everything and threatened to sue everyone, not allowing anyone to check his phone, and in the end being totally aquitted after being banned just over a month. The last I read about it Bindrich had sued his federation and hoped to get €68 000 from them but apparently this failed. But he has at least been playing happily ever since, for example in the latest World Blitz and Rapid Championships.

Honza Cervenka: <MrMelad: I hope his GM title gets stripped>

Why it should be stripped of him? Rausis earned the title back in 1992, when even I could give any computer a piece odds and win the game without much troubles. He was a champion of Latvia in 1995, and up to the year 2015 he played quite consistently on the level around 2500. What became quite suspicious, it was his sudden gradual improvment in classical chess after 2015 in age 54.

Jul-16-19  DrGridlock: From the FIDE handbook:

https://www.fide.com/fide/handbook....

FIDE Title Regulations effective from 1 July 2017 As approved by the 1982 General Assembly and amended by the General Assemblies of 1984 through 2016, effective from 1 July 2017.

0.4
The titles are valid for life from the date confirmed.

0.41
Use of a FIDE title or rating to subvert the ethical principles of the title or rating system may subject a person to revocation of his title upon recommendation by the Qualification and Ethics Commissions and final action by the General Assembly.

0.42
A title is officially valid from the date all the requirements are met. In order for a title to be confirmed where it is based on an application, it must be published on the FIDE website and in other relevant FIDE documents for at least 60 days. For registered automatic titles see below, 0.5.

0.43
The title can be used for results of opponents only in tournaments starting after the confirmation. (exception: see 1.15).

0.44
In terms of, for example, the age of achieving a title, the title is considered to be achieved when the last result is achieved, and the rating requirement is fulfilled, whichever date is later.

0.45 In case it is found after a title has been awarded that the player was in breach of the Anti-Cheating Regulations in one or more of the tournaments on which the title application was based, then the title may be removed by the Qualification Commission. The federation of this player may appeal this decision to FIDE Presidential Board within 30 days after they had been informed in writing.

One sports MD explained the effect of EPO (or of classical blood doping) thus: Give me a clean skier -- this lecture was in the context of nordic skiing -- that regularly finishes 60+. And, with EPO, I will put him on the podium.

maturner: Seems likely he was cheating because of the big difference between bis classical rating and his blitz and rapid rating.

MissScarlett: <Mr Rausis confessed to cheating on four different occasions, in three instances by using his mobile phone and in the other instance by pre-arranging the result of a game, and was found guilty as such on the basis of his own version. Taking into account Mr Rausis’ acknowledgment of guilt, his co-operation at the hearing and remorse displayed, as well as his personal circumstances, but keeping in mind the precedent established by the ETH’s decision in case no. 7/2015, the ETH unanimously decided to sanction Mr. Igor Rausis with a worldwide ban of 6 (six) years to take effect from 31 July 2019 and to end on 30 July 2025. During this period Mr. Rausis is prohibited from participating as a player in any FIDE rated over-the-board chess competition (whether classical, rapid, blitz or Fischer-random chess), and from any chess-related activity as an arbiter, organizer or representative of a chess federation. In addition, Mr. Rausis’ grandmaster title is revoked effective from the date of publishing this decision.>

1982, maybe.

<He shouldn’t be stripped of his GM title.>

Is Rausis the first to have a FIDE title rescinded for cheating? No doubt FIDE would resist suggestions that they revoke titles for non-chess related crimes or misdemeanours.

Dec-07-19  jith1207: He's clearly a Russian Spy, doing his part time job in between games.

Proof?

Rausis is an Anagram for Russia. ;)

I hope the other job continues to provide the major share of financial support for him.

See Gaioz Nigalidze

Dec-07-19  jith1207: I'm sure the FIDE has a separate folder archive of photos of various chess players attending to their nature calls in bathroom stalls during tournament games.

If you're one of those guys who like to pee in the stall, while having your head tilted towards the ceiling with closed eyes, your photos might've even captured funnier facial expressions.

Not to worry, FIDE must only do so if your rating has increased abnormally. Hopefully.

Dec-07-19  Caissanist: Sadly, this is going to kill classical tournament chess. Virtually the only open tournaments 20 years from now will be rapid and blitz where you are not allowed to leave the board.

Check It Out: I find these cheater stories fascinating. This is a problem chess tournaments need to continuously address. As devices get smaller and more sophisticated, cheating will be harder to observe. I'm going to get an implant; see you in November, Carlsen!!
