IGORS RAUSIS
(born Apr-07-1961, died Mar-28-2024, 62 years old) Latvia (federation/nationality Czech Republic)

[what is this?]

Ex-Grandmaster and FIDE Trainer Rausis played for the Czech Chess Federation. He was Latvian Champion in 1995. In his fifties, Rausis experienced an increase of over 200 points in his rating, putting him among the top 100 players in the world and taking his rating to almost 2700. In July 2019, he was accused of cheating by using a mobile phone in the bathroom during a game. Rausis subsequently pled guilty and in December 2019, FIDE revoked his GM title and banned him from OTB play or other involvement in official competition for six years until July 2025. Rausis was previously married to Olita V Rause, with whom he had two children.

Nov-30-14  ljfyffe: Igoris Rausis placed sixth for Latvia in the ICCF
Worls Cup VII (1994-2001) Final.
Dec-06-17  diagonal: At age of 50+, Igors Rausis achieved for the first time in his life an Elo rating of 2600 points, in the FIDE December 2015 list.

New nominal personal peak rating at age of 55+: Elo 2632 in October and December 2017.

Jul-22-18  WorstPlayerEver: Really? Rausis, who is an occasional player, he was only active in 1999 and 2001 (...) just entered the Top 100 hundred at age 57! Spread the news! Elo 2651

Comet Rausis incoming!

Aug-02-18  diagonal: Igors Rausis, a pretty frequent player, has already been ranked as a Top-100 player, longtime ago in 1993 (January and July list), but then with a far lesser Elo rating than today.

Now Rausis, born in 1961, achieves his nominal peak Elo rating of 2651, ..at age of 57..

He is currently the oldest Top-100 player of the world.

Aug-02-18  JimNorCal: Great photos and congrats to GM Rausis for his resurgence.

Oddly, in the first photo Rausis looks tall and rangy across from Shakh. Yet, in the 2nd photo, he seems shrunken and Shakh looks both taller and thicker. I guess the draw took a lot out of Igors!

Jan-11-19  AsosLight: That's a VERY strange statistical oddity. Curious to learn more about his background.
Jan-12-19  hemy: <Oddly, in the first photo Rausis looks tall and rangy across from Shakh. Yet, in the 2nd photo, he seems shrunken and Shakh looks both taller and thicker.>

On the first photo Rausis is close to the photographer's camera, on the 2nd photo Shach is closer.

alexmagnus: So, who <is> Rausis? Why did he suddenly get back into top 100 at the age of 57? Was there something interesting about his life?

By the way, finally an old player whose <ranking>, and not just rating, is close to peak at quite an old age. Takes away some of those inflation arguments who say (look, the player X is 40 and his Elo peaked...).

Rausis was in the top 100 on only two lists before 2018 (January and July 1993, aged 31-32, ranked 97 and 86). His current live ranking, 93, will be his second highest ever if it becomes official.

Jun-02-19  sonia91: 58-year old Rausis achieves a new peak rating of 2669 (!) in the June list, surpassing his previous record of 2659 achieved in the February '19 list:

https://ratings.fide.com/top_files....

Jun-02-19  siggemannen: Damn <sonia91>, you beat me to it :). I've HEARD of this player, but not that much more than that. Anyone else have any info?
Jun-30-19  AsosLight: When he dies, he has to donate, his brain or his smartphone, to science.
Jul-02-19  Imran Iskandar: Rausis now up to 2686. Seems this page hasn't picked up on why he keeps on rising (although this has been mentioned on ChessBase before). His latest game is against a certain Giuseppe Bisignano who is currently rated 1785, almost 900 points lower than Rausis. Yet according to FIDE's rules, any rating difference of more than 400 will be treated as if the rating difference were exactly 400, i.e. it is rated as if Bisignano's rating were 2269 (since 2669 was Rausis' previous rating). In beating Bisignano (or any other player rated 400 or more points below him), Rausis gains exactly 0.8 points.

Looking at Rausis' FIDE profile, there are many more such games as these, with the occasional game against 2300-2400s. In short, he is beating up lower rated players and receives more points than he should be. Don't get me wrong; I'm actually somewhat impressed. Obviously a single loss to any of players would undo the progress of about 12 games (5 games for a draw). He seems to be exploiting a loophole within the way FIDE calculates its rating changes.

Just for fun, here's what would happen if he keeps going (assuming he doesn't lose a single game and only plays players rated more than 400 below him):

- In 18 games, he will cross 2700

- In 80 games, he will cross 2750

- In 93 games, he will enter the top 10 (assuming a threshold of about 2760)

- In 143 games, he will cross 2800

- In 233 games, he will overtake Magnus Carlsen (current rating of 2872)

- In 245 games, he will break the record for highest FIDE rating ever

- In 254 games, he will break the record for highest live rating ever

- In 268 games, he will cross 2900

Of course, my guess is that FIDE will do something about this long before he achieves most of these.

alexmagnus: FIDE must finally abolish the damn 400 point rule. But mid-tier GMs (players around 2600) won't let it do it. They are too scared to lose a couple of rating points more than normal (which can mean a lot in professional life) by an occasional draw against a patzer. Which is a weird fear, given that they are <expected> to draw sometimes. In the long run those rating losses would equalize themselves.
Jul-04-19  sonia91: Apparently he declined the invitation to the FIDE Grand Swiss: https://www.facebook.com/emil.sutov...

  Sally Simpson: ***

There seems to be two pages on this lad here, this one and Igor Rausis (there it is Igor instead of of Igors)

He is a FIDE arbiter and is possibly doing this as an experiment/test to show up this amusing flaw in the rating system.

At the time of posting he is currently 42 on the live chess ratings. At this rate he may get into the candidates as the highest rated non-qualifier.
