Faruk Bistric was awarded the title of International Master in 1997 and that of Grandmaster in 2003.

Bistric earned his first GM norm at the 7th Croatian Team Championship-2nd League in 1998, his second when he won the International Grandmaster Tournament in Kastav, Croatia, in 2000 and his third and final norm at the Bled Olympiad in 2002. He also won the Rijeka IM 2001 and won team gold with SK Zeljezne in the Bosnian League in 2002.

Bistric's participation in team events included the Olympiads of 1998 and 2002 (first reserve in each appearance), the European Team Championships of 1999 (first reserve) and 2003 (board 4).
