Oct-04-04 | | arifattar: <islam spilling over into politics and society and that is where some of the "problems" arise.> Islam hasn't spilled over into politics and society. The latter are constituent parts of the former and thus can never be separated. |
|
Oct-04-04 | | square dance: <azaris> you are exactly right. |
|
Oct-04-04 | | square dance: <arifattar> then maybe that is the problem. the seperation of church and state is probably one of the better ideas in recent history. at least from my point of view i can appreciate it. |
|
Oct-04-04 | | arifattar: I would like to believe that this very separation which exists right from Indonesia to Morocco is in fact at the heart of all that ails the Islamic world.
Any attempts at reconciling, like the ones in Algeria and Afghanistan, have been brutally suppressed. |

Feb-08-12 | | timhortons: http://www.alarabiya.net/articles/2... Organizers of an international chess tournament in Corsica said on Tuesday they had expelled Iranian Grandmaster Ehsan Ghaem Maghami for refusing to take on an Israeli player. |

Mar-18-12 | | shivasuri4: Playing in the 12th round of the Bundesliga 2011-12, Ehsan Ghaem Maghami of Hamburger SK beat German GM Daniel Fridman of SV Mulheim Nord in a 51 move game.It was a complex game with exposed kings. Both missed many winning chances, with Fridman making the last critical error at move 40(Qb7, instead of the equal Qe6). |
|
May-19-14 | | capafischer1: He is a great grandmaster and very good friends with Gelfand. Because of politics he can not play against Israeli players when he plays for Iran. By the way his last fide rating is 2580. He also beat Daniel Friedman in bundesliga a while back and he is jewish but not from Israel. Either way I know this guy personally and he loves all chessplayers. |

 | | Penguincw: Happy 32nd birthday to GM Ehsan Ghaem Maghami. So far, at the Chess Olympiad (2014), he's 3/6 (+2,-2,=2). Good luck to him and his team as they face Ireland. On board 1, he has white against GM Alexander Baburin. |

Mar-18-15
 | | offramp: I've been thinking about that simultaneous world record, set in Tehran in 2011. I live in London, the centre of the world, and if I was asked to find 600 chess players I could probably do it. I could teach some myself. But most of those players would be incredibly weak, barely above beginner-level. I'd expect them to lose in about a dozen moves. In Tehran it may be different. It may be possible in that focus of chess history to find 600 strong chess players who are all available for the same time-window. Or perhaps 95% of the 600 were total and utter patzers who were only barely aware of the right way to move the pieces.... I don't know, I'm just a caveman!! |
