CURT HANSEN
(born Sep-18-1964, 60 years old) Denmark

[what is this?]

GM and GMC Curt Hansen rose to prominence in 1983 by winning the Nordic Championship and defeating Bent Larsen in a rapid match. Shortly after he captured three consecutive Danish Championships (1983-85) and the World Junior Championship of 1984. He achieved the grandmaster title in 1985 at Copenhagen, and in 1992 he became the first Danish player in over twenty years to pass Larsen on the FIDE rating list. He was also Danish champion in 1994, 1998 and 2000. Hansen's own tenure as the highest-rated player from Denmark was to last until 2003, when he was overtaken by Peter Heine Nielsen.

May-06-04  Poulsen: No kibitz on Curt Hansen? Strange..
Strong GM - perhaps even stronger than Peter Heine Nielsen. Former Junior World Champ - Denmarks sekond GM (after Bent Larsen). Leading after 5 rounds in Sigeman www.sigeman-chess.com
May-06-04  Poulsen: Hansen also won in round 6 - and since Nielsen lost to Carlsen, Hansen is well ahead with 5/6 before the last 3 rounds!
May-06-04  acirce: Did Tiger lose a won game again?
May-06-04  Poulsen: Tigers position looked good around move 20 - but in timetrouble he didn't find a winning line. Instead Hansen managed to get behind Tigers lines - and inspite of being in bigger timetrouble than Tiger, he finished him of with an elegant move.

Curt Hansen is known to be very concentrated when playing - even during timetrouble.

May-06-04  Poulsen: Typical Curt Hansen wins:
Sasikiran - Hansen, 2003
Hansen - McShane, 2003
May-06-04  MoonlitKnight: 5/6 against average opposition of 2557 so far is quite impressive. Anyone know the performance rating?
May-07-04  Poulsen: It might even be 6/7!! - he's a pawn up against Beliavski in a queens endgame.
May-07-04  acirce: Yeah, with all the light on Magnus Carlsen we are almost ignoring this amazing feat.
May-07-04  ajit: Yep he will win again. No doubt absolutely. So thats going to make it 6/7. THats a truly majestic performance against someone like Beliavsky, that too with black! Say how old is he? This performance is too good for a GM worth 2635. Does anybody know his performance rating?
May-07-04  ajit: Now just as I said that, he makes an error! Nothing significant but losing tempo! 75...g6 (g5! wud have been better). Still shd win.
May-07-04  ajit: Woops!! Time trouble! With less than 5 seconds left on clock, I guess it was wise to draw.

Jan-11-11  nummerzwei: From Carsten Hansen 's (another Hansen) review of 'Secrets of Rook Endings, which appeared in 1999 :

<For several years, British Grandmaster John Nunn had produced a number of excellent opening books, including books on the Najdorf Variation in the Sicilian Defence and the Pirc. Then in 1992 he turned his attention to the endgame, specifically five-piece endings. With the help of a database constructed by Ken Thompson, Nunn was able to cover all endgames with five pieces with unprecedented accuracy. His work resulted in three books, Secrets of Rook Endings, Secrets of Minor Piece Endings, and Secrets of Pawnless Endings; all three books were published by Batsford Books.

Back then, the publication was surrounded with much controversy. Most notably Danish Grandmaster Curt Hansen openly expressed his feelings in a letter in New In Chess. He found this form of chess with its ultimate answers repulsive, as it meant, at least for him, that chess would lose some of its magic. Others, along with Nunn of course, were of the opposite opinion, that a book like this could only raise the level of chess and help us gain a better understanding of these positions with limited material. >

VERY interesting. Perhaps Hansen stopped playing in 2007 because he felt there was too little magic left in chess.

Does somebody have the full text of Hansen's reader's letter?

Mar-19-15  Poulsen: Curt Hansen is back in business! He is playing in the danish championship tournament in yearly april.

It will be interesting to see his current strenght. For years he was the best danish player next to Larsen. Just over 20 years ago he was in top 20 in the world.

Troller: And now he is playing the qualifier for Norway Chess!

http://www.sjakkbloggen.no/chess-qu...

Hansen and Agdestein should be considered the principally strongest participants - they have both been in the world's top 20 - but they have also both been largely chess amateurs with long inactive periods. And of course, they are not exactly young anymore...

Jul-30-16  diagonal: One of Curt Hansen's most memorable tournament wins: Vejstrup, Denmark, in 1989 (including all three Polgar sisters in a closed event): http://www.ajedrezdeataque.com/11%2...
