ARTHUR BISGUIER
(born Oct-08-1929, died Apr-05-2017, 87 years old) United States of America

[what is this?]

Arthur Bernard Bisguier was born in New York, USA. Awarded the IM title in 1950 and the GM title in 1957, he was closed US Champion in 1954* and open US Champion in 1950, 1956 and 1959. He narrowly lost first place on tiebreak to Robert James Fischer at the 58th US Open (1957). He won the Manhattan Chess Club championship in 1948, 1949, 1957-58, 1958-59, 1967-68, and 1968-69.

Bisguier played in the interzonals of 1955 and 1962 and was on five US Olympiad squads from 1952 to 1972. In tournaments he finished equal first with Savielly Tartakower at Southsea (1950), first at Vienna (1952/53), equal first at Rosenwald (1955/56), equal second at San Juan 1969, and first at Lone Pine (1973). He got an even score at the very strong Bled (1961) tournament, including wins over Keres and Geller.

Toward the end of his life, Bisguier was the world's oldest active grandmaster, his last tournament being the MCC Memorial Swiss in Natick, Massachusetts in September 2014.

Jan-05-11  wordfunph: 1971 Tallinn International Tournament:

Arthur Bisguier related, other than the games, this was his cherished moments of the tourney..

"There was a Finnish-type sauna filled with the world's best chess players, steaming naked, drinking beer and eating sausages and caviar ---all the time kibitzing and talking chess."

:-)

HeMateMe: Nothing personal, but I get worried when guys get excited about steaming naked chessplayers. But, the cavier sounds quite nice.
Jan-15-11  wordfunph: GM Arthur Bisguier was the host of a television series for Teleprompter Cable TV in New York, and was on the air during all the games of the match, similar to the way Shelby Lyman's show was presented. A special feature of Bisguier's program was made to allow viewers to call the station with suggestions, questions, comments, etc.

During the 20th game of Fischer-Spassky, a viewer called to suggest a move for Spassky while Bisguier was waiting for news of Spassky's actual move. Arthur explained that the suggested move would lead to a dead draw. A few moments later, another viewer called with the same suggestion, and Arthur patiently explained for a second time that the move would lead to a draw. Within five minutes, a third viewer phoned in and the same move was again suggested. This time, Bisguier announced that if anyone else called with the same move, he would declare the game drawn by repetition of phone calls!

SteinitzLives: Hurrah! His book "The Art of Bisguier", long out of print in hard back, is out in paperback! Bought it, loving it!

I won't call him the "American Bronstein", (not yet) but he has been honored rightfully as the "Dean of American Chess" for his longevity, playing achievements, contributions to the game in many ways, and wonderful creativity in his play!

SteinitzLives: GM Bisguier, a great man among sharks most of his life. Happy Birthday Arthur, hope to see you at USATE next year!
Oct-08-14  TheFocus: I have both volumes of his <Art of Bisguier>. Nice books.

SteinitzLives: I read that Bisguier is only four degrees of separation from Morphy, (how many living players can say that!) in that he played Tartakover, in 1950 who battled just about everyone, including Blackburne in 1907 who played Anderssen in 1862, who played Morphy shortly before then.

I had the pleasure of playing Bisguier in 2011 so I am just five degrees away. I feel a trip to New Orleans coming on.

Tim Krabbe: "I once played an official game with Euwe who played Tarrasch, who played Paulsen, who played Morphy."

Joshka: <SteinitzLives> Hey if simuls count, I'm one degree away from Petrosian!:-) Got to play him in Boston, Ma. in the early 80's.

perfidious: Met Bisguier four times in serious play so am also a Morphy 5, not to mention in simuls during 1974-75.

In large part due to those games, I am also two degrees from all the FIDE world champions in the period of Botvinnik through Kasparov, except Tal, whom I actually played some blitz games with late in his life.

Oct-19-14  RookFile: Bisguier played Reshevsky who played Lasker who played Bird who played Morphy.

Bisguier played Kashdan who played Showalter who played Bird who played Morphy.

Interesting exercise. I'm sure there are other ways.

Oct-19-14  RookFile: Us New England guys who played Harry Lyman know that Harry played a simul game against Lasker, who played Bird, who played Morphy.

perfidious: Not, of course, that anyone would have heard about it from Harry in general; despite his considerable strength and aggression at the board, he was a mild, self-effacing man.
