Kibitzer's Corner
Sep-15-12  Karpova: The July 1855 issue of the 'Wiener Schachzeitung' reports on page 257:

I'm not sure if von der Goltz is really meant as the name is not spelled out. Does anyone know more about the matter?

Sep-15-12  thomastonk: <Karpova> I can confirm that von der Goltz is meant. The following quotation is taken from Baron Tassilo Heydebrand und der Lasa 's "Berliner Schacherinnerungen", 1859, p. 67:

Goltz und A. v.

The Evans gambit is the game Von Der Lasa vs A Von Der Goltz, 1839.

Sep-15-12  Karpova: Thanks, <thomastonk>! Do you know what is meant with <dem traurigen Schicksale der Dichter Hölderlin und Lenau erlegen sein> - is it insanity?
Sep-15-12  thomastonk: <Karpova> Hölderlin was mentally ill for more than 36 years. It started with some kind of mania, but later he lived silently in a room of a house which has been a tower in the city wall of Tübingen. Lenau suffered a stroke and lived for almost six in mental derangement.
Sep-15-12  Karpova: Since von der Goltz died 3 years after the news, it's likely that he didn't recover from his illness.
Sep-15-12  thomastonk: <Karpova> Yes, it is likely but not sure. Yesterday you quoted a similar statement on Emmanuel Schiffers ' page, but he recovered at least once more before he died (yes, most probably Schiffers had another disease).

When I saw your question, I remembered von der Lasa's quotation, because von der Goltz reported in the late 1840 about chess in the Rhineland, i.e. the area pictured here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rhinel.... His reports appeared in the "Schachzeitung" and cover towns like Bonn, Cologne, Koblenz and Aachen (where I live).

Oct-02-13  thomastonk: There is an obituary with a copy of his death notice (including the exact date) in "Schachzeitung", vol. 14. 1859, p 285. I hope to come back here and write a brief bio.
