Stonehenge: http://niederoesterreich.chess.at/S... says he died on January 7 1994 in Los Angeles.

I can find a Zoltan Eduard Theodor Kovacs, born October 6 1914 and died on January 8 1994 (in LA).

Dec-23-21  Alan McGowan: That's him, based on the Austrian chess history document, his U.S. Naturalization record, and his May 1955 arrival in the USA on the S.S. Maasdam.

  Stonehenge:

Do you know where he was born?

Dec-24-21  Alan McGowan: Sorry <Stonehenge>, I don't know where in Hungary.

Stonehenge: At least http://budapestisakkmuzeum.com/wp-c... also has 1914-1994.
Dec-24-21  Alan McGowan: Several newspapers reports on the Hastings Premier Reserves 1947-48 give Z. Kovacs (Vienna) as the winner. He finished with 6½/9 and his win against van Doesburgh was awarded the 4th Best Game Prize.

Sources: Hastings and St Leonards Observer, Saturday 10 January 1948, p1, and 7 February 1948, p7.

Dr J.M. Aitken, who lost against him, also records in his notebook that his opponent was Z. Kovacs.
