USCF Life Master. J. Eugene ("Gene") Salamon was born on September 29, 1929 in Gijon, Spain. His uncle was Alexander Alekhine's personal physician. In the late 1940s he immigrated to Cuba. In 1952, he qualified for the Cuban Olympiad team, though circumstances prevented him from playing. Following the Cuban revolution, he immigrated to the United States in 1960, living in New York and later New Jersey. His last tournament, at age 91, was the 2020 U.S. Amateur Team East. He is the author of the autobiographies Jugando en el tablero de la vida (in Spanish) and the later Sweet Memories: Family, Friends, Chess & Sugar (in English).

  perfidious: Salomon liked Spain (see below), and he liked the Dutch: in the 1987 New York Open, I beat him very quickly in the line 1.d4 f5 2.e4 d6 3.exf5 Bxf5 4.Bd3.

Apr-03-17  blackburne: Eugene J Salomon nació en Gijón (España), donde vivió, y fue jugador de ajedrez, hasta 1947. Luego vivió en Cuba y finalmente en Estados Unidos, donde retomó su carrera en el ajedrez. La partida que hay contra Alekhine es verdadera.

  perfidious: Besides being, to my knowledge, my only Alekhine-2, Salomon is a Portisch-2. Though I have a few others of the latter (Lombardy, Tal, Browne, Benjamin and Benko come to mind at this moment), I do not believe I ever faced anyone else who got to sit opposite both.
