Sep-14-04  meloncio: Joaquín Torres Caravaca (1888-1948) was Medicine doctor and, as amateur, a very strong Sevilian chessplayer, but most important he was a remote relative of mine (my mother's uncle's uncle, more or less, :-D).

Some notes about him (in spanish): http://usuarios.lycos.es/clubateneo...

Sep-14-04  Lawrence: <meloncio>, that article mentions that Torres Caravaca beat Alekhine once. I wonder if the gamescore is preserved anywhere.
Sep-14-04  meloncio: Maybe in the Ateneo de Sevilla Archives. Someday I will ask there about it.

BTW, I'm sure that the game C Torres vs Menchik, 1929 have a wrong name (Who was Cristian Torres?) and is the famous win of my distant relative over Vera Menchik in 1929 Barcelona Int. Tournament. He was the only Torres in the players list, so I have to repair this injustice.

Sep-15-04  Lawrence: <meloncio>, you'll be relieved to know that your great-great-great aunt didn't have a cow-like face (Caravaca). Her ancestors were surely from the town of Caravaca, and I've just received the following information: "Es un nombre de origen ligur, del primer milenio antes de Cristo, y su posible significado hace referencia a un poblado enclavado en un cerro, poblado elevado." Nothing to do with cows. Or faces.
Sep-15-04  meloncio: <Lawrence> Thanks, I feel relieved to know it. I can easily imagine how much they (the whole family) suffered at the school hearing cruel jokes from their comrades.

My mother knew uncle Joaquin, and she told me: "Oh yes, he was tall and thin, but the best I remember is that he was soooooooo ugly, and how my sister and I (then young girls) laughed at him for that." Poor Joaquin!

Perhaps he DID have a cow-like face.

Sep-15-04  meloncio: <offramp> No; according to my mother, he had bird-like face rather than cow. A myopic bird, because he used to wear thick (??) glasses.
Jul-16-06  Calli: < Torres Caravaca beat Alekhine once. I wonder if the gamescore is preserved anywhere>

I am a few years late but the score does exist. It is a simul game in Seville, 1 of 28. Will submit it to CG.
