Kibitzer's Corner
Nov-23-14  ljfyffe: Placed 2nd in the B section of the 1987-1994
ICCF World Cup Final.
Jul-01-15  zanzibar: Is there also a separate player named

<Wolfgang Rohde (GER)>?

https://www.iccf.com/player?id=82198

Might the GM title somehow gotten merged into the name?

Jul-02-15  zanzibar: There is another, distinct but similarly named ICCF player to Rohde (mentioned above):

<Wolfgang Grohde (GER)>

https://www.iccf.com/PlayerDetails....

I believe this is the ICCF player that matches the FIDE/CG player listed here.

Looking at the ICCF site, the 1999 corr games look correct, but the 1988 ICCF WC final game belongs to the stronger player <Wolfgang Rohde (GER)> who is missing from <CG>.

Jul-04-15  ljfyffe: <zed>Rohde? Are you sure? Timmerman and Grohde played a game that ended in a draw in the 1987-94 ICCF final, Section B mentioned above.
Jul-05-15  zanzibar: <ljfyffe> well, I need to know the source of your statement in order to reply.

As I said, there are two players whose names could easily confused, both active at about the same time.

Drop a note with your ref, and I'll come back and recap my sources.

(The short answer is no, I'm not 100% sure. But I'm using <crawfb5> and ICCF as my sources, and <crawfb5> sources are ICCF according to him, and the PGN gives [Source "Chess Mail Ltd."])

Jul-05-15  ljfyffe: Source: <ICCF Gold> published 2002 ed. Pedro Hegoburu. Table for 1987-1994 World Cup V Final "B" has Wolfgang Grohde (Germany)drawing with Gert Jan Timmeran(Netherlands) as the Nimzo-Indian game on this page is labelled above. The final began on Dec. 30, 1987, for all intents and purposes 1988 as indicated for game above. The ICCF book does not give the name of the opening played in the game; just the crosstable:<On account of too many participants, there were two final groups with equal rights.>
Jul-05-15  zanzibar: <lj> OK, that's more workable. I'm doing <Monte Carlo> at the moment, but I'll come back and try to resummarize with your source now included.
Jul-06-15  zanzibar: OK, thanks. As I said the two names are close enough that somebody like me, who is easily confused, is easily confused.

So I was wrong - because I confused the 1988 CC World Cup Final (where Grohde played) with the 1988 17th CC World Championship Semi-Final 5 (where Rohde played):

1988 CC WCup Final "B" (with Grohde):

http://tables.iccf.com/world/cup/wc...

1988 WC 17 Semifinal 5 (with Rohde):

https://www.iccf.com/event?id=38863

Master ICCF tournament index (old and new):

http://tables.iccf.com/index-tbl.html

Jul-06-15  ljfyffe: <zed>Of course, I expect that you will "fall on your sword" forthwith; the only <honourable> thing to do, don't you think?
Jul-06-15  zanzibar: Ha! Didn't I just do?

Anyways, that's why I like to leave a doc trail - then it's easy to evaluate correctness.

And we still need to introduce a new player to get the ICCF WC Finals fully onboard.
