  offramp: In yesterday's London Times GM Keene gave the finish to a game where the Baron had, in a chessic way, annihilated Aron Nimzowitsch. He was clearly a good player.
Btw, have a look at his relative's short mad life on wikipedia: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rom...

  offramp: In this position, "Simul, Dorpat 1910" says Raymond, as black against Aron Nimzowitsch...

Black played:

1... Qh3+ 2. Kxh3 Ne3+ 3. Kh4 g5+ 4. Kxg5 (4. Nxg5 Ng2+) 4... Rg8+ 5. Kxh5 (5. Kh6 Ng4+ 6. Kh7 (6. Kxh5 Ke7 7. Nxe5 Nxe5 8. Rg1 Rxg1 9. Bd2 Rg6 10. Kh4 Be6 11. Bxf4 Rh8+ 12. Bh5) 6... Kf7) 5... Bg4+ 6. Kh6 Rh8+ 7. Kg5 Ke7 8. Nxe5 Rh5+ 9. Kxf4 Rf8+ 10. Kg3 Rh3+)

And won.

Oct-15-13  whiteshark: <offramp> Thanks for bringing this grand final to our attention! I found the complete game, fully annotated by both players in

<Aron Nimzowitsch: On the Road to Chess Mastery, 1886-1924> <Skjoldager and Nielsen, McFarland 2012, p122-3>

Oct-15-13  thomastonk: <offramp> Kurt = Roman Nikolai Maximilian? What about this one: http://www.geni.com/people/Kurt-von... ? It seems that there have been also a Kurt Albert with this name.

<whiteshark> Please, what do Skjoldager and Nielsen know about him? Thanks in advance.

Oct-15-13  whiteshark: <thomastonk> not much, only

"The local master <Baron Kurt von Ungern-Sternberg>..."

The Baron's annotation has been published in the <Nordlivländische Zeitung>, w/o a date.

Other games from the Dorpat simultans have been annotated in the issues dd Nov 4, 1910 and Nov 18, 1910; so it's likely his comments were also from there or that time around.

* local = Dorpat

Oct-15-13  whiteshark: <thomastonk> your given link 'Slepkavība (nošāva boļševiki)' translates to Murder (shot by the Bolsheviks)
Oct-15-13  thomastonk: <whiteshark> Yes, I read and tranlated it. The life of the other one, Roman, has been no Ponyhof, too.
