VICTOR BOLOGAN
(born Dec-14-1971, 53 years old) Moldova

[what is this?]

GM Victor Antonovich Bologan (1991), world renowned theoretician and currently (January 2015) the top player in Moldava.

Viorel (Viktor) Bologan was born in Chisinau, Moldova. He began to compete internationally in 1991, reaching the FIDE World Top 100 in ratings when he was in his late twenties. 2003 proved to be a breakthrough year, as Bologan won the Aeroflot Open in Moscow to receive an invitation to the annual Dortmund super tournament. The Dortmund field included World Champion Vladimir Kramnik, Viswanathan Anand, and Peter Leko, among others. In what is widely considered one of the greatest upsets in modern chess, Bologan took first place by a full point.

In 2005, Bologan tied for first in the Karpov Poikovsky (2005), reaching a 2700 rating for the first time in his career. He qualified for the World Cup (2011) as a nominee of the FIDE President, winning his first round game against Bartosz Socko, but was beaten in the second round by Leinier Dominguez Perez. He came =2nd (7th on tiebreak) at the 13th European Individual Championship (2012) with 8/11, thereby qualifying for the World Cup (2013), and rejoined the 2700 club for the first time since July 2005. In the first round, he defeated veteran Czech GM Zbynek Hracek but was eliminated from the event when he lost to Russian GM Peter Svidler in the second round rapid game tiebreaker. In October he was 2nd reserve in the Malachite team that won silver in the European Club Cup (2013). Won the Chebanenko Rapid Open 2014 held in April 2014 in Moldova.

A theoretician as well as player, Bologan has written books on openings including: <The Chebanenko Slav According to Bologan> (2008); <King's Indian: A Complete Black Repertoire> (2009), and <The Rossolimo Sicilian: A Powerful Anti-Sicilian that Avoids Tons of Theory> (2011), as well as the following training DVDs: <The King's Indian> (2009); <The Caro-Kann> (2009); <The Sicilian Rossolimo for White> (2010); <The Fighting Philidor> (2010); <Beating the Sicilian: Grandmaster Bologan's Repertoire Vol. 1, 2 and 3> (2011); <The Catalan: A complete repertoire for White!> and <Fit for the French>. He has also authored a collection of his games: <Victor Bologan: Selected Games 1985-2004> (2007). His book <Bologan's Black Weapons in the Open Games: How to Play for a Win if White Avoids the Ruy Lopez> (2014) was the runner-up in chesscafe.com's 2014 Book of the Year competition. https://chesscafe.com/book-reviews/...

He lives in Germany.

Feb-09-09  PhilFeeley: Does anyone know what's happening with Viorel these days? His website hasn't been updated since this time last year, and I haven't seen his name in any major tournaments these days, including Bundesliga and Aeroflot.
Feb-09-09  sallom89: <PhilFeeley> All I remember is that he is currently training the Qatari team last time I've seen him. I believe this is an enough reason for him not to appear alot those days.
Feb-17-09  YoungEd: I too just picked up a copy of his Selected Games, and I agree with <dx9293>. It's an interesting book and the annotations are good.
Apr-21-09  Raisin Death Ray: Live long and prosper!
Oct-23-09  tud: Viorel, vorbesti romaneste? Rusii au luat Basarabia de doua ori in 1812 and 1941 si au schimbat multe dar romanii fac parte din Europa si tu esti o mindrie a Moldovei (Romaniei) ?

Jun-17-10  jmi: No offense to the contributor, but can we have a better picture of him? It could have been anyone in the photo. :)

Thanks.

Dec-14-10  Shams: Strongest player to pick up the Tango, so I'm a fan. :)
Dec-14-10  theodor: theodor: < Benzol: <waddayaplay>> <His name is given as Viorel in all major chess magazines. There's another story, concerning my given name. Mama wanted to call me Viorel from the begining - in fact, that's what she calls me to this day. The problem with that is, there's no such name in the Orthodox baptistery; so they wrote my name as Victor. This is the name that adorns all my official papers, including the rating-list. In Moldovian, Viorel means "violet", while Victor is Latin for "winner". So it is that I have spent my whole life oscillating between two personas: the romantic, cheerful, sweet Moldovian Viorel, and the dry, direct, powerfully driven-to-win, sportingly evil Latin Victor. - from "Victor Bologan Selected Games 1985 - 2004".> I think 'viorel' is nearer to fiore(italian - flower, than to viola - violet!). italians have the name fiorello.
Dec-14-10  theodor: Fiorello Henry La Guardia (pronounced /fiəˈrɛloʊ ləˈ¨Àw¨»rdiə/; born Fiorello Enrico La Guardia; December 11, 1882 ¨C September 20, 1947) was Mayor of New York for three terms from 1934 to 1945 as a liberal Republican. Previously he was elected to Congress in 1916 and 1918, and again from 1922 through 1930. Irascible, energetic and charismatic, he craved publicity and is acclaimed as one of the three or four greatest mayors in American history. Only five feet tall, he was called "the Little Flower" (Fiorello is Italian for "little flower", diminutive of fiore, Italian for "flower").
Dec-14-10  theodor: <Gologan River (Olt) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia The Gologan River or Mãrioara River or Caracal River is a tributary of the Olt River in Romania. References. Administraþia Naþionalã Apelor Române - Cadastrul Apelor - Bucureºti> maybe this is the ethymology of bologan.
Dec-14-10  theodor: cheren gologan se ne gubi
Dec-14-10  theodor: mr Bologan, wish you all the best, not only in chess!
Dec-14-10  theodor: I apologize for the heavy bombing.
Apr-07-11  wordfunph: "This was my first experience playing in America, and I felt like I had arrived on a different planet. The people looked the same, the houses were made of stone, and the cars rode on wheels --- but to this day, I just cannot get used to the American rhythm of life." (in 1993 New York Open)

May-30-11  bronkenstein: Just dropped by to say few words on Viorel´s book on KID .

Sharp and ambitious with black , written with true Gelfandian love of player-researcher , pretty much to my taste =). It made me start playing my ex main (Volga) as a surprise only.

PS , approx 50% of the content , made of offvariations (˝this variation is not so good for black , but...˝ ) could be removed freely , turning this into standard ˝black repertoire˝ stuff and cutting the size to more user friendly format.

Apr-25-12  jon01: 40-year old Bologan just reached TOP 20 in Live Ratings list with a remarkable 2728,1, just ahead of WC challenger Gelfand (2727,0).
Apr-28-12  hedgeh0g: Yes. In one of the most incredible rating-climbs in recent history, Bologan now lies in 19th place on the live ratings list having gained a whopping 45(!) rating points from 39 games.
Apr-29-12  Blunderdome: Quite a few points to gain in one rating period. Usually you only see the youngsters doing that.
