Aug-06-04  ArturoRivera: < sneaky pete> I must apologize, but since i am Mexican, i am just learning to speak English and if you could see me, some kitbitz i do them with a dictionary at hand and some kitbitzes i read them with a dictionary, but the prhase you are making allusion is in spanish <"La siciliana es la respuesta mas varonil al insolente 1.-e4>, i tough i had posted the correct translation, but maybe the word doesnt exist, varonil in spanish is a word that connotates men, i do not not how exactly to translate the word (a friend of mine tryed to translate it), but it means that using the sicilian is the more men-actitude, but still is not the word i am triying to translate, i will look it for you ;)
Aug-07-04  HailM0rphy: <petey> varonil literaly means manly in spanish
Aug-07-04  ArturoRivera: <HailM0rphy> yes, you are absolutly correct!, dont you know in english another word for it?

Benzol: varonil = masculine I suppose.
Aug-07-04  HailM0rphy: <art> Erm.. ok theres manly, masculine, muscular, pride, tough, hardcore, brave, bravado, fearless, powerfull, mighty, godly, me..how many more would you like?
Aug-07-04  Canto: <yes, you are absolutly correct!, dont you know in english another word for it? >

I think it is most similar in construct to the English "Virile"

Aug-07-04  Lawrence: What about the good old English word "macho"? A real real one.
Aug-07-04  Canto: < Lawrence: What about the good old English word "macho"? A real real one. >

Touche ... as well as one well placed "lol" if ever there was one.

Bring on c5 white mates in 26 [;(or so)/ how funny is that parenthesis{;like a bracket in search of it's true function,< ;just as rust colored words feverishly engaged in the romantic notion that they burn through to clarity and rebirth in form of quotation, will, alas, consume each new day.> / ] ... and I have a Bridge in Brooklyn I can sell real cheap.

Aug-07-04  ArturoRivera: Virile is the most close english word for varonil, however i dont think macho is close, but virile is a very good translation

tpstar: It's worth noting how the sleep-inducing agent veronal was an old school murder device (Agatha Christie), therefore better synonyms for this context might be "confrontational" or "fighting" or (cover your ears, kids) "ballsiest" instead!?
Aug-07-04  HailM0rphy: For gods sake he knows the meaning of the word by now!
Aug-11-04  Shadout Mapes: Sarcasm is usually signified by the tone of voice. Don't get frustrated when it's lost over text, people might think you're just stupid instead of joking.
Aug-27-04  Miss Ter: Is B33 part of the sveshnikov or does it have its own ECO code?
Aug-28-04  paultopia: It would appear that it doesn't. Shame, really. I'd like to see a separate ECO for the pelikan. I've been experimenting with 6. ... Bb4, and would be nice to get other people's thoughts...
Aug-28-04  Miss Ter: dangit. oh well thanks.
Jan-19-05  hjsukthankar: Why is 6. Nb3 never played?
Jan-19-05  Backward Development: It's not really challenging black's position. White doesn't put forth any threats and so black may play as he pleases.
Feb-05-05  aw1988: After 1. e4 c5 2. Nf3 Nc6 3. d4 cxd4 4. Nxd4 Nf6 (or 4...e5, the Kalashnikov) 5. Nc3 e5 the problem with 6. Nb3?! is that the point of the Sveshnikov is that black has many holes, but black may combat this by attacking in the center. d5 is the biggest hole, and Nb3 does not exploit this. 6. Nb3?! Bb4 7. Bd3 d5 and black has a fine game. Check out Schlechter-Lasker 1910.
Feb-05-05  aw1988: The main line is 6. Ndb5! d6! 7. Bg5! a6! 8. Na3 b5!.
Feb-05-05  aw1988: Of course, 6. a4!? is perfectly playable as well.
Feb-17-05  dragon40: I prefer, if I play this variation of the Sicilian (with the Black pieces, as White I am a D pawn player exclusively) to use 4...Qb6. It is a little explored variation and can be used as a good surprise weapon and since there is little theroy, it places both players on a relatively equal playing field. Anyone else have any comments on this sub-variation?
You can also use it after 1. e4. c5; 2.Nf3, e6; 3.d4, cxd4; 4.Nxd4,Qb6 as well...) Id really like to discuss this with people, so please express ideas here or mail me directly; my e-mail is in my profile!
Feb-17-05  Backward Development: <The main line is 6. Ndb5! d6! 7. Bg5! a6! 8. Na3 b5!.> wow, that's an awful lot of exclamation marks, you wouldn't happen to know Life Master AJ would you? :)
Feb-17-05  dragon40: <backward development> Have seen his posts and visited his Web Page. I think that is a tad too many ! though, and the main line is not always the best. I think an immediate 5. Be3 might be beter, at least it has given me many, many problems! I am talking about the 4..Qb6 line, not the Kalashnikov however.
Feb-18-05  aw1988: I know it is meant in jest, but I must answer this seriously. I know OF him, I have seen his web page, but I do not know him as a person.

For the main line Sveshnikov they do deserve exclams. Ndb5 attacks d6, d6 defends against that, Bg5 places pressure on the center, (and with a pin) a6 chased away a knight to the passive square a3, and b5 threatens a fork, with queenside expansion.

Feb-18-05  Backward Development: So every opening manual should show the 'best play' with exclamation marks on nearly every move?
