FSR: This game was played in a thematic tournament where all games began 1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Bc4 Bc5 4.d4. 4.d4 isn't great, but is not as stupid as it looks. (4.O-O Nf6 5.d4!?, the Deutz Gambit, may be a slightly better way to play it.) All three captures are reasonable. 4...d6??, as in J A Gutierrez Bolado vs J Jensen, 2017, is not.

After 4...exd4, 5.Ng5 Nh6 6.Nxf7 Nxf7 7.Bxf7+ Kxf7 8.Qh5+ is equal. White can also play 5.c3, when Black should decline the pawn with 5...Nf6. Then 6.cxd4 Bb4+ and 6.e5 d5 lead to standard Giuoco Piano lines, which are also equal.

4...Bxd4 5.Nxd4 Nxd4 (5...exd4 6.O-O gives White enough compensation to equalize) 6.Be3 Nc6 7.Qh5 Qe7 8.Nc3 Nf6 9.Qh4 d6 10.Bg5 Be6 11.Nd5 Bxd5 12.exd5 Nb8. Now White can castle either way, with decent compensation for the pawn (about -0.2), or try to regain it with 13.Bb5+ Nbd7 (13...c6?! 14.dxc6 bxc6 15.Ba4 or, worse, 14...Nxc6 15.O-O-O, is better for White) 14.Bxd7+ Qxd7 (the greedy 14...Kxd7!?, keeping the pawn, is also OK) 15.Bxf6 gxf6 16.Qxf6 Rg8 17.g3.

4...Nxd4 and now (a) as seen in this game, 5.Nxe5 Qe7!▢ 6.Bxf7+ Kf8 9.Bxg8! Kxg8 10.Ng4 (or 10.Nc4) Qxe4+ 11.Ne3; (b) 5.Be3 Qf6 6.Bxd4 exd4 7.e5 and now 7...Qh6 or 7...Qf4. In both lines Black has only a slight advantage. In the second line, 5...d5!? 6.Bxd5 Nf6 7.Nxe5 Nxd5 8.Bxd4 Nf4 9.Bxc5 Nxg2+ 10.Ke2 Nf4+ 11.Ke3 is also possible. Now 11...Ng2+ 12.Ke2 Nf4+ would repeat moves. F Rhine vs S Renard, 2025 instead continued 11...Qg5 12.h4! Qxe5 13.Qd4! Qxd4+ 14.Bxd4 Ne6 15.Nc3 and White was slightly better (1/2-1/2, 30).
