Jan-25-25  chatushkon64: Gukesh resigned in a drawn position here. He could have played on with Rc3 Rxg6+ Kf7 and there is no way for white to win.

This ill-thought out resignation meant Iran drew the match with India 2-2, and went on to win gold in the event.

Jan-26-25  Retireborn: It does seem that 64.Rg7 is a mistake and White could have won with 64.Kxg6!

One wonders if Gukesh actually lost on time though.

beatgiant: It's instructive for the theory of these rook endings where one side has an extra rook's pawn and bishop's pawn. Black needs to get his king to the g7 square to be on the short side of the f-pawn while stopping the h-pawn.

With 64...Rc3 65. Rxg6+ Kf7 66. Kxh5 Ra3, White can't cut off Black's king. For example 67. Rg5 Rb3 68. g4 fxg4 69. Kxg4 Ra3 is a tablebase draw. As soon as White's rook leaves the g-file, Black plays ...Kg7.

But with 64. Kxg6 Rc3 65. Ra6+ Ke7 66. Kxf5 Rxg3 <67. Rh6>, White arrives just in time to be able to take the h-pawn and cut off Black's king.

For if now 67...Kf7 68. Rxh5 Kg7 would allow a rook trade with 69. Rg5+, or 67...Ra3 68. Rxh5 Kf7 69. Rh7+ Black's king is a move too late and gets cut off.

perfidious: Most informative; the only time I have ever had this ending was in an ICC blitz game with the GM Lugovoi, and he had no trouble holding.
Jan-26-25  Retireborn: <beatgiant> Thanks for those variations.
