PawnSac: Typical Fabi... Solid to the core
Aug-29-22  Viking707: Fabi is at home in St. Loo, and his game shows it.
Aug-30-22  Mississaugan: What's wrong with 24.Rxg5 winning the black Queen?

  keypusher: <Mississaugan> 24.Rxg5 Re6 25.Rxg7+ Kxg7 26.Qg5+ Rg6 and there is no good answer to ...Rh8+.

I love the final position -- 27.Rxg5+ Rxg5 and White can't recapture!

  keypusher: Some quick SF notes:

11.d4 should have been preceded by Bxc6 (11.Bxc6 bxc6 12.d4 exd4 13.e5! Qg7 14.cxd4). Caruana showed why in the game.

If 13....Bxc6 then 14.e5! dxe5 15.Ne4 Qe7 16.cxd4 exd4 17.Re1 (threatening, e.g., Nxg5) and White has a small advantage. But Caruana was alert.

18.Rb5 just didn't work, but presumably Firouzja knew he was in bad shape and wanted to try something. It's a blitz game, after all. But we got to see some neat tactics thanks to his decision.

The engine slightly prefers 26....Qg6, but Caruana's 26....Qh8 is also crushing, not to mention the kind of move you never forget.

Aug-30-22  Mississaugan: <keypusher> Thanks.
Sep-24-22  Cheapo by the Dozen: 22 ... Bxf2+ would be impressive in a slow game. Late-week puzzle material at a minimum.
Sep-24-22  Cheapo by the Dozen: In the final position, not just queens but also rooks are going to be exchanged off. So yes, the game was very finished.
